Jamie's actions
Balancing Consumption
Less Screen Time
I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Balancing Consumption
Needs Vs. Wants
Each day, I will practice a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Enacting Equity
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
I will watch 1 documentaries about racism and racial injustice.
Enacting Equity
Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses!
I will shop at a small business owned or staffed by underrepresented members of my community.
Balancing Consumption
Develop a Work-Life Balance
During the work day, I will schedule time for breaks to practice work-life balance.
Balancing Consumption
Know My Waste & Recycling Services
I will spend 30 minutes finding out how to recycle in my region, where landfills and/or waste sites are situated in my region, and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Balancing Consumption
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.
Regenerating Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside and often with electronics with quality time outside walking, exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, observing nature, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Regenerating Nature
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 2 hour(s) for a nature-based event or another opportunity to support my community.
Cultivating Communities
Pull Together Items to Donate
Each day, I will find one or more items I can donate to a local thrift or resale shop.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnacting Equity Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses! In your community, how can you work to address systemic racism, sexism, ableism and additional forms of exclusion in the businesses?
Jamie Damato 10/26/2022 9:19 AMI plan to continue to show my support for underrepresented small business owners through my patronage as well as promotion through social media and word of mouth. -
Jamie Damato 10/20/2022 11:55 AMLess than a week left and I still have quite a few one-time actions to complete. I have already learned more about my footprint and more sustainable options and best practices this year, as I do with every challenge [love this platform] but it's time to get focused and get going on my open action items. Hope everyone else is doing well and finishing strong! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Repair a Broken ItemWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Jamie Damato 10/14/2022 3:00 PMI found out two weeks ago that my dryer broke (for the second time in a few months) so I have been reluctantly shopping around for a "new" dryer, dreading the expense of course! So, I decided to take a look and found that the front of the frame was not in place correctly, which was causing the drum to be unaligned and pinching the wires to the door...So, I got a screwdriver, unplugged the machine and went about partially disassembling my dryer. I made sure everything was in its proper place/alignment, correctly "snapped" the frame into place and tightened all the screws...Wallllaaah! I had no expectations so I am EXTRA pleased with the outcome. Tested it out a couple of times already, no issues and everything working as it should.
Now, not only have I postponed the inevitable cost of having to replace it at some point and released a heavy stressor on my mind, but (1) one less large appliance in a landfill and (2) 100% DIY...I have a pleasant sense of accomplishment as well.
Now, let's just hope I don't have to revisit this action again any time soon!-
Mary Hanks 10/23/2022 1:26 PMWow! I'm impressed with how much you accomplished with this action! -
Timothy Dow 10/17/2022 10:38 AMGreat story, Jamie. Must have been very rewarding.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Jamie Damato 10/14/2022 2:52 PMLearning to practice a life of simplicity doesn't mean the process is going to be convenient. And convenience, for me, is not often the most sustainable option. Instead of buying a tool for each task that needs completing, I now have to be creative and maybe determine how to reuse/repurpose/acquire/etc. a single tool that can support completing multiple tasks. It's not always an obvious solution, and that is where creativity comes into play. -
Jamie Damato 10/12/2022 8:05 AMI'm looking forward to diving in on my one-time action selections. As with each challenge in the past, I always end up learning so much and increasing my awareness of my individual impact on the environment and community. Can't wait! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Jamie Damato 10/12/2022 7:59 AMEspecially while working in a remote capacity, it is so important to have a balance between the work and the personal, as the division between the two is far more blurred. If I can't step away from work or step away from personal dealings to focus on the other, I end up distracted and not performing or functioning at my best. That is certainly NOT sustainable for success. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Pull Together Items to DonateHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?
Jamie Damato 10/11/2022 1:46 PMI like to create 'limits' for groups of items, even clothing. For example, if I see a pair of pants that I really like or want, I can only purchase them if I replace them with a pair I no longer need. My goal is to step that up to bringing in one new item, letting go of two...and so forth. It's a good habit and puts the 'accumulating' in check a bit more.-
Timothy Dow 10/17/2022 10:41 AMI try to do the same, but my one weakness is concert t-shirts. I can't get rid of the old ones!
