Kristina's actions
Enacting Equity
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
I will watch 3 documentaries about racism and racial injustice.
Nourishing Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste, excess carbon and save money by planning my daily and weekly menus so that I only purchase the ingredients needed.
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.
Cultivating Communities
Donate Blood
I will donate blood in my community to make sure there are adequate supplies for routine medical services and emergencies.
Balancing Consumption
Develop a Work-Life Balance
During the work day, I will schedule time for breaks to practice work-life balance.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kristina Franklin 10/26/2022 4:01 PMThis was a great challenge! Every day the check in caused me to reflect on my environmental impact as a whole, not just related to the 5 items I had specified. I picked one challenge from each group. The easiest one for me was to donate blood. This was probably cheating, because I'm a regular blood donor anyway. The most difficult ones were the daily challenges. I know that by meal planning and being conscious about my meals I reduced food waste, and I know that by focusing on maintaining a good work/life balance by taking little breaks helps me focus throughout the workday. I hope to maintain my actions and maybe a few new ones. :-) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Kristina Franklin 10/20/2022 1:07 PMI studied plants I can add to my yard for attracting native bees, and found a great resource of information from Oregon State University! Native bees are important because they are docile, and help pollinate the fruits and vegetables we eat and produce for our local economy. I plan to add some of these plants to my currently unlandscaped backyard. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Donate BloodWhy do you donate blood?
Kristina Franklin 10/12/2022 4:54 PMThis was my 63rd donation! I donate blood because I am fortunate to have good health that I can use to help those who are in need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Kristina Franklin 10/05/2022 4:36 PMThis does not surprise me! I would rather use an extra $1500 to travel, buy new ski and bike equipment, or add to my house repair fund. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Kristina Franklin 10/05/2022 4:34 PMPracticing a work-life balance allows for mindfulness. Mindfulness leads to being more efficient with my work, and also brings calm to daily life.
