Hannah's actions
Enacting Equity
Money for All
By watching a documentary about economics I can learn more about how different people are treated differently within a community and I can learn how to support those people by being aware of what is going on around me. Learning more is the first step in taking action.
Regenerating Nature
Learning More
I will spend a few hours learning more about current energy usages and what the future predictons are for US energy consumption.
Nourishing Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Cultivating Communities
Reduce Carbon Emissions
Rather than driving to places nearby, I will walk to reduce my carbon footprint.
Regenerating Nature
Helping Out
I will go out and spend time volunteering in the community to help make this area a better place and to learn more about the local community.
Regenerating Nature
Calculate My Water Footprint
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Regenerating Nature
Complete an Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, work, or other shared space to identify the next steps for saving energy.
Regenerating Nature
Reusable Waterbottle
I will use my reuseable waterbottle or a glass instead of getting a disposable cup.
Nourishing Food
Eating Healthier
Rather than eating desert I will eat fruit after my meal.
Nourishing Food
Wasting Less
I will only get as much food as I can eat
Regenerating Nature
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 2 hour(s) for a nature-based event or another opportunity to support my community.
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 240 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.
Nourishing Food
Advocate for Equitable Food Access
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for equitable food options at work, campus, or in the spaces I frequent by contacting community leaders and/or doing other advocacy actions.
Balancing Consumption
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Enacting Equity
Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses!
I will shop at a small business owned or staffed by underrepresented members of my community.
Balancing Consumption
Personal Waste Audit
Each day, I will collect, track, or take a picture of all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to know how much I send to the landfill.
Balancing Consumption
Reduce Social Media Use
I will use my social media only once per day.
Balancing Consumption
Develop a Work-Life Balance
During the work day, I will schedule time for breaks to practice work-life balance.
Balancing Consumption
Less Screen Time
I will replace 30 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Nourishing Food
Eat Plant-Based Meals
I will enjoy 3 meatless meal(s) and/or 3 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Hannah Gaibor 10/26/2022 8:05 PMI think a big part of this challenge isn't necessarily from making a huge impact completing the actions, but rather in the reflection and self awareness that comes after. It's important for us to step back and really look at ourselves in another light to truly understand what we are doing and what we can do differently to make a difference. -
Hannah Gaibor 10/26/2022 8:03 PMUsing my water bottle more over using the glassware in the dining hall is a small thing that I can do while here at SU. Bringing it places with me also prevents the need to buy a drink in a single use package. -
Hannah Gaibor 10/26/2022 8:01 PMAfter working hard to live more sustainably for the ecochallenge, I feel accomplished. While I know my actions for this challenge were only a small fraction of what needs done to make a difference, it felt good to work toward a goal that I am passionate about. Thank you Ecochallenge!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Repair a Broken ItemWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Hannah Gaibor 10/25/2022 8:51 PMI fixed some of my clothing that ripped. In general I always try and fix things before tossing them so that I can continue to use them and don't create excess waste, but that isn't always possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Eat Plant-Based MealsWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Hannah Gaibor 10/25/2022 9:15 AMI really enjoy when my boyfriend cooks Beyond burgers for me. He seasons them very well and I think that it's also the aspect of having someone care for you makes it taste better. One of my personal favorite vegetarian meals though is bean chilli. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Less Screen TimeWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Hannah Gaibor 10/25/2022 9:13 AMI feel that for people who spend more time using technology they end up being more disconnected with the people around them. While it can help to spread knowledge and influence to others, it can really damage a community by taking away the communal aspect. By taking the time to learn and interact with your own Community you learn how to be more involved and how to be a good citizen, which I think is an important practice in living sustainably. -
Hannah Gaibor 10/25/2022 9:10 AMAs we approach the end of the ecochallenge I am finding myself more motivated to practice being more conscious of my actions on a daily basis. Being a college student, I found it hard some days to try and live sustainably but I am making an active effort to try. I hope that after this challenge I can work toward living a more sustainable life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Hannah Gaibor 10/11/2022 8:01 PMHaving a balance between work and life gives me more time that I can spend planning ahead to ensure that what I do is more sustainable rather than having to act last minute and do something I may not want to but need to. It also gives me more time to spend doing what I love and to get outside more. -
Hannah Gaibor 10/10/2022 8:08 PMI think it's important to learn more about ways to live more sustainably. Once we start learning then we can start incorporating what we've learned into our daily lives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Hannah Gaibor 10/08/2022 7:40 PMFood sovereignty, from what I learned, is helping people (specifically people of under-represented and peasant origins) of different areas to be able to provide for themselves and eventually have the opportunity to earn some money in the process of learning to and having the ability to provide for themselves and making the rules and regulations around what they grow rather than producing and having to follow a corporate structure.
