Enacting Equity Learn About Accessible & Equitable Voter Registration
Why is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?

Voting is important for creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world because, in theory, supports what the people want and can make a big change in current and future policies that are not severing the community anymore. Local voting is especially important as that is what is going to directly impact the community you live in and add to the change you want to see on a bigger scale. I think another way that people can actively participate in decision making is being aware. What is coming up on the ballot? Are they registered? Are their friends and family members register and aware of current issues? When does voting start and end and how are you and others around you planning on voting? Being aware of the process, your plan, and what is on the ballot is arguably more important that the voting itself because if you do not have a plan or understand the changes you are voting on it does not do you good. Encourage others to partake in your plan to vote, discuss issues and go to together to vote!

I'm not only encouraging people to discuss the issues and vote--I'm trying to arrange it so we can all use public transportation to go vote and save on fossil fuel emissions! My city offers free bus and train rides for voters,  so it's a win any way I look at it.

What most interested you, or surprised you about your energy audit?

    Brie McGie 10/26/2022 11:07 AM
I realized that just because I use slightly lower than an average household in energy doesn’t mean I am doing the best I can to decrease that energy intake. There are so many more little things I could be conscious of such as unplugging items in my home when not in use, walking more to our local store or farmers market, using less heat or AC unless it is absolutely needed, and so on. Being more conscious of my day to day about the little changeable habits don’t add any stress to me and can be add up to be a big personal impact to the climate crisis.

Regenerating Nature Calculate My Water Footprint
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

    Brie McGie's avatar
    Brie McGie 10/26/2022 11:04 AM
One way I will reduce water use is being more conscious of where I shop and what I am buying. I understand there is give and take and I cannot always spend the money for the top ethically made clothing but instead focus on second hand clothing, repairing what I currently own, and only replacing what I need instead of shopping for fun or with trends.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Enacting Equity Research Indigenous & First Nations Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, “most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation.” Why is balance important to sustainability? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous community, how does your community practice sustainability?

Balance is important in sustainability because we come from the Earth along with every other living thing. Humans tend to hide behind their technology and complex lives. They can sometimes be so removed and disconnected from the land, plants and animals around them, where their food comes from, the extreme weather, bacteria, and even other humans. Without balance we are going to continue to become more disconnected with our world as well as be more willing to keep going as well are without putting in the work. With the advancements we have in our knowledge and technology we have continuously proven to ourselves that the climate crisis is real and there are copious amounts of scientific evidence available stating that we need to change our ways and hold one another accountable in this change. In addition, supporting accountability in legislation and corporations who would rather turn a blind eye. We do not have time for anti-science policies or lack of forward movement. Listening and supporting the Indigenous communities that have been caring for this Earth long before ourselves and following suit in their steps of restoration is one of the most important actions we can start taking to help the climate crisis.

What event did you volunteer for and what was the experience like for you?

    Brie McGie's avatar
    Brie McGie 10/25/2022 10:06 AM
I volunteered at my local farmer's market picking up trash and ensuring vendors and guests disposed of everything correctly so we can keep our streets and events clean and as low waste!

Nourishing Food Research the Benefits of Agricultural Biodiversity
What are the benefits of agricultural biodiversity and how do you see this connecting to overall biodiversity?

    Brie McGie's avatar
    Brie McGie 10/25/2022 9:54 AM
Agricultural biodiversity is imporatant to the environment because ecosystems whether it is in the wild or in the soil or farming are important systems that create balance and weave together to support one another. If one part of biodiversity is threatened or out of balance it will most likely effect a lot more than the eye can see in other systems that inturn affect animals and humans alike.

    Regenerating Nature Spend Time Outside
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Brie McGie's avatar
    Brie McGie 10/25/2022 9:49 AM
Cultures who spend more time inside and infront of screens can suffer from many things. I think screen time impacts your life more then people care to admit and not getting fresh air and outdoor movement time cause really inhibit mental health issues as well as cognitive abilities.

How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Brie McGie's avatar
    Brie McGie 10/25/2022 9:45 AM
I have always been passionate about public transportation and it is really lacking in our area which has brought an even wider awareness to people all over the country who do not have access to good public transit or when they do it takes too long and does not run frequently. I am really passionate about advocating for safe and timly transport in our community.

    Nourishing Food Compost Food Scraps
As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Brie McGie's avatar
    Brie McGie 10/25/2022 9:39 AM
I realized when I first started composting how much I was truly thorwing away. Yes, composting is awesome but I was still composting a ton so I strated to become more aware of how much I was not using of the fruits and veggies I was buying. I feel a lot more on top of using my food before it goes bad and using as much as I can to create as little food scraps as possible!

It is not possible at the moment for my husband and I drive less for our jobs as we both work in the opposite direction without public transit around but we can help out more by being more conscious of our pacakge food and locally scourced food options as well!
