Takeaways from EcoChallenge 2022 - The biggest challenge was setting so many goals made it difficult to address all of them.  It was fun but difficult to achieve on a daily basis.  However there are a couple of actions that I will pursue, if not on a daily basis then at least frequently during each week.   I am most proud of my day-to-day consistency in the small things I do to reduce my impact on this Earth.  This proactive approach of challenging ourselves by setting goals and be conscious of them each day helps to develop and reinforce good habits.  Next year I will promote the Challenge and encourage friends to get involved.

What are you most proud of as a DEP employee?

As a DEP employee I am most proud of the commitment of management and staff to protecting and improving New Jersey's environment for the benefit on its residents.  Whether it be clean air, water quality, protection from toxic and hazardous waste, noise, environmental justice, or providing quality hunting and fishing opportunities, DEP employees apply best science and and take personal responsibility for positive results.

What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Andy Opperman's avatar
    Andy Opperman 10/22/2022 8:56 PM
I believe that a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens will notice an impact on the health of individuals.  A sedentary life can result in obesity, potential heart issues, and overall reduced quality of health.  Excessive screen time may have deleterious effects on eye health and eyesight.  It is important to achieve a balance in these activities and time spent outdoors in sunlight and fresh air, or at least away from screens.

As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Andy Opperman's avatar
    Andy Opperman 10/14/2022 7:20 PM
We have been composting for years.  The scraps are mostly that, food scraps such as apple cores, banana peels, wilted salad components, etc.  By composting we are more cognizant of the produce in our fridge and work harder to use it to prevent it from becoming "waste."  We also add lawn clippings and leaves, "green" materials, to enrich our compost which is then blended into our garden next season.

I spent a lot of time outdoors today & exploring my local.  It started with 30 minutes having lunch with my wife & friends in the courtyard at work while coworkers provided musical accompaniment.  Then 90 minutes helping a friend empty her storage locker for a move into her newly-purchased home.  And lastly my wife & I rode our bikes for 90 minutes around town & through a park, siting 7 deer, various birds, golfers & neighbors.

    Why do you donate blood?

    Andy Opperman's avatar
    Andy Opperman 10/11/2022 6:11 PM
I donate blood because the need is so great, because I have blood that others need desperately, and there are so many people who can’t donate for many reasons.  Unfortunately, I realize that I won’t be able to donate during this EcoChallenge since I donated in Sept and am not qualified until November.

As part of my time spent outdoors today I filled 6 bird feeders with different types of seeds & a suet feeder with two suet cakes and sat quietly to see what birds would come in.

Cheers to bird feeders! I've been casually birding and looking for fall migrants in Middlesex County. Any interesting finds in your area?

As part of my time spent outdoors, my wife & I had dinner outdoors with 2 other couples at one of the couple’s home.  All 3 couples contributed to the meal.  Our social time included observing a Ruby-throated Hummingbird still enjoying what it could find in some native flowers & a Downy Woodpecker visiting for seed.  We also played some music on Mountain Dulcimers.

I spent 3 hours with Boy Scouts & adult leaders from Camden County (NJ) learning about issues relevant to the scouting community.  And it was a beautiful day for such an activity.

Very cool. Curious to know what initiatives boy scouts have been working on these days.
