Since it was finally warm here again after so much snow, I took the opportunity to walk along the field bordering my neighbourhood, until I reached a small park I hadn't seen before. Combined with the slush of the snow melt, the sunshine made it easy to spend roughly an hour exploring.

For my zero-waste supper, I opted to use up eggs that were going to go bad soon rather than cook something newer/more exciting I bought. It seems small, but I appreciate how natural it has become for me to be mindful of these things.

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity…and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.” — William Blake

Although I'm usually more of a saver than a spender, when I came into some money the other day I found myself thinking about the benefits of saving up for things I really need. Since then, I've been attempting to take the money itself off of my mind, and attempting to be content with just "letting it sit".

Enacting Equity Shop at BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled, & Women-Led Businesses!
In your community, how can you work to address systemic racism, sexism, ableism and additional forms of exclusion in the businesses?

I believe in order to address the fact that minorities are more often excluded from starting businesses on a personal level, it’s important to actively seek out local opportunities. Limiting shopping at big corporations, knowing where your product comes from, and knowing what you may be indirectly supporting by purchasing a product are all essential in pushing more people towards more sustainable and diverse options.

    Balancing Consumption Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Selena Rennie's avatar
    Selena Rennie 10/16/2022 7:44 PM
Creativity is necessary for practicing simplicity as in our modern day, we are pushed towards over-consumption and subsequent waste as the norm, and as such need to be able to think outside of the box in order to get back to more simple and eco-friendly solutions for our problems.

What is one way you will reduce your carbon impact? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon impact?

To reduce my carbon footprint, I educated myself on fast fashion and am now going to actively seek out ways to repurpose clothing and avoid mass marketing. Already I spend approximately 1 day a week using any sort of vehicle , and otherwise walk anywhere I need to go or use public transportation.

The biggest source of my water use seems to be my diet, and since my mom is vegan I'm going to try and cut down meat to 1 meal a day instead of 2 to reduce consumption. Already in use, we barely leave our kitchen or bathroom sinks running, and have all water-saving toilets.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nourishing Food Make Zero-Waste Meals
How did you incorporate using an entire vegetable (skins, peels, tops, and stalks) during one of your meal preps? What's something new you're going to try that is a zero-waste meal practice?

I often use whole potatoes, and skip peeling off the skin in favour of cleaning them well, I also tend to use typically discarded ingredients (such as stalks, tops, etc) to make soup stocks/bases to avoid waste. I've also recently been more conscientious of eating more leftovers, and not just throwing away anything left on my plate.
