REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Forest-Friendly FoodsHow did you figure out ways to remove foods that are not forest-friendly?
Courtney Schneider 10/12/2022 6:52 AMFirst and most obviously way I've removed destructive forest products is to buy local. I am intental about shopping at my own local grocery store that has a focus on localized, organic and clean-ingredient products. This not only ensures my grocery purchases aren't negatively affecting the rainforests, but also puts money back into my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnacting Equity Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary ExperiencesHow is equality for trans, femme, and nonbinary people important to a just and sustainable society?
Courtney Schneider 10/11/2022 8:21 AMI think that equality for trans, femme, and non binary folks is important to a just and sustainable society because it builds humility, compassion, understanding and acceptance towards all of humanity. To have a sustainable society, it requires human beings moving and living through the world in a peaceful way. Every person is an important part of our Earth and our environment. Excluding essential and very real parts of our society, would be like saying "oh we have to keep the oceans clean, but the rivers, lakes, ponds and streams aren't the majority and aren't necessary to keep clean". Every human being deserves a just society and equality within that society, just as much as human beings need air to breath. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Calculate My Carbon FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon impact? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon impact?
Courtney Schneider 10/07/2022 11:14 AMOne way I will reduce my carbon impact is to intentionally eat less meat! In the past few years, I've already begun to be less interested in certain kinds of meat (especially beef). It seems like a natural transition that I could actually sustain as part of my lifestyle.
As of late, I have been intentional about only walking to the pharmacy or post office (several blocks away) instead of driving. It helps stretch my legs and move around, as well as, reduces the amount of trips I make from my home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Calculate My Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Courtney Schneider 10/07/2022 10:59 AMI already turn off the faucet when I brush my teeth and have repaired several water leaks leading to my house. Mary P. gave a great tip of using the water used from letting the water heat up to water plants. I think I will give this a try :)-
Mary Parsons 10/07/2022 2:37 PMI refill our keurig/coffee maker water wells while getting the water hot for washing dishes! Or time washing dishes (obviously requiring handwashing) for when the dishwasher is already running, because the water is already hot. This really comes from a neurotic place inside of me that doesn't like water just running for no reason rather than intentional reduction of water use. :D

Courtney Schneider 10/07/2022 9:23 AMToday's tip is all about leaving room for failure. During this Ecochallenge, it helps to leave room for failure as we work to take action daily or regularly.
Forgot your action yesterday? It's okay – try again today! Better to take action imperfectly than to not take action at all. Keep going! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Take Shorter ShowersWith 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?
Courtney Schneider 10/05/2022 11:31 AMNot exactly the prompt but.... I was very surprised I was able to take a LESS than 5 minute shower. 4 minutes and 2 seconds. Before I got in, I Googled to see if there were any tips or tricks to taking a fast shower. I used some of these tricks and they actually made a difference. I was even able to shampoo and condition my hair without rushing! Next time, I might even add brushing my teeth to my shower routine with my extra time!
The next way I'm going to adjust my habits in favor of water conversation is to water my plants with water I used to boil eggs, pasta, etc. (minus the salt, of course), instead of just dumping it out into the kitchen sink.-
Courtney Schneider 10/06/2022 7:54 AMOh that's a good idea! We recently got a few potted plants outside, this would be a relatively easy adjustment! Thanks for the recommendation, Mary. -
Mary Parsons 10/06/2022 7:16 AMMy husband is obsessed with having a beautiful green lawn and sent me off to take my shower with a bucket to collect the water while I waited for it to get hot! Maybe if you collect that water, too, you could "earn" a few more seconds of shower time.

REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Use Resources for Climate AnxietyIs climate anxiety a new concept for you or something you have been following for sometime?
Courtney Schneider 10/05/2022 8:21 AMClimate anxiety is a new term for me, but it is not experientially new for me. I have experienced climate anxiety for many years, but now finally have a name for it.
In my time learning about climate anxiety, I read a Wired article called Climate Anxiety has a Whiteness Problem. This is something new for me. I hadn't considered before that the way people experience climate anxiety is very likely to differ for marginalized populations. Marginalized populations tend to live in areas with limited options for safe drinking water, areas bombarded with hazardous material waste and manufacturing pollution, areas with increasing amounts of natural disasters, and so much more. What I as a privileged white person would experience as climate anxiety, may very likely be normal life experiences for marginalized communities.
Social justice and environmental justice are so much intertwined than I would have previously thought. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Know My Waste & Recycling ServicesWhat did you find surprising or hopeful in your research?
Courtney Schneider 10/05/2022 8:01 AMIn communities where curbside recycling is not an option, I found small businesses are collecting recyclable glass in these communities and making a single haul to the next county over to make sure the glass is properly and safely recycled.
I find in my own community, I get excited to see when my neighbors are connecting with the neighborhood on ways to address the waste in our lives in a more sustainable fashion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Courtney Schneider 10/05/2022 7:51 AMPracticing a work-life balance allows me to have the patience and motivation to put forth effort into developing and maintaining a sustainable life. It allows for time to learn about new initiatives and put into practice the things I have learned.
I believe, in a broad sense, having a healthy work-life balance gives people the opportunity to realign their thinking patterns and allow time for reflection. I experience less anxiety when I have a healthy work-life balance which offers space for me to actual consider how I can make my life more sustainable, rather than feeling overwhelmed and defeated. -
