Okay, I just read that we're running low on Helium, a nonrenewable element that is essential to keep MRI machines running. But we've made sure that we can fill balloons that are sooo good for the environment. What kind of 'special stupid' are we as humans? There are just days when I know we are reaping exactly what we deserve for our asinine behavior.

Carol, I've been concerned about the helium supply myself for years. I recently read that Harvard University had to shut down equipment and curtail experiments due to lack of availability of helium. I know that there have been problems at a helium enrichment plant in Texas and the Amur plant in Russia. I have to agree that it's not smart to use this resource flippantly--especially when all too often the helium-filled balloons are released to pollute the environment and harm animals.

Just looking around on the internet to find the best time to buy a new electric lawn mower and discovered there are actually electric snow blowers as well. I've seen the little ones that you can pick up with one hand and don't move much snow, but these are full size blowers. Maybe if I get into shape mowing next summer, I can manage to move the snow next winter. Something to work toward.

I had an opportunity to buy a fountain pen the other day when I ordered next year's planner. I haven't used one for decades but I've always liked the way they write. The good news is that it isn't a disposable, but it has cartridge refills.

What does this have to do with an Ecochallenge? I did some digging and actually found refillable, non-cartridge fountain pens--didn't think they still made them. So I can have the best of both; a fountain pen and refilling that doesn't create more plastic waste.

So did you see the story about United Airlines wanting to have electric planes by 2030? The plane will be nothing but batteries--there won't be any space for people or cargo. {:p

I'm doing some research into getting an electric mower. I've had a service for a few years because of my age but I think I could handle one of the battery-powered models. And, I always hated having to deal with the gas and had a really hard time with the starter pull.

One of the positives that came out of the Covid pandemic is that my organization is more open to people working from home--either full time or hybrid. So I've worked from home 3 times this week saving about 50 miles driving to work and running errands. I can't do that every week, but I can save mileage several times a month.
