Checking in here every day has already made me more aware of our goal of sustainability and what will help us get there.  Tonight with our neighbors we talked about how going meatless has a big impact on our planet.  I was able to share what I have learned here about food.

    Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

It seems that in Lafayette, IN the city is on a path to sustainable water in the future.  Some things that citizens can do to help the change:
Increase home and business WATER REUSE practices
Upgrade SEPTIC SYSTEMS or connect to sewer systems
Use less water - only flush when necessary, use an HE washing machine
Here is a link that I found of our Sustainable Water Future Roadmap:

  • Reflection Question
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

The biggest barrier for me is remembering to bring my reusable bottle.  Luckily, now I have a toddler who I like to keep hydrated.  One time use water bottles aren't the best container for her.  So, whenever we leave the house I make sure that we both have our filled up water bottles.  I also bring my water bottle to work to work so that I don't use plastic cups for my beverages.

We are lucky to have a new Food Waste Management Program here in West Lafayette, Indiana.

In March I got a 5 gallon bucket from the GoGreener Commission.  I was committed to collecting the spent grounds and dropping off at the recycling center on my drive home.  It lasted a couple months, but one day I had to rush home and skipped the drop off.  I still have a 5 gallon bucket of coffee grounds sitting it my garage!  I plan to start the routine of composting again. 😀

Growing up, if there were extra lights in the house, my mother would ask, "Would you like to pay the electric bill?"  I find myself sometimes saying the same thing to my husband in our home.  Although, he does pay the bill! The question does help our awareness.  We use LEDs and also buy alternative energy credits through our service provider, yet I know it is not enough.  Energy conservation has been a habit since my childhood, Thanks mom!

My motivation is my daughter - so she can have a place to grow up and live, really live.  I've been making small changes and am ready for this EcoChallenge.  Let's do this!
