I generally get 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night but don't sleep until 1:00 a.m. most nights. I would like to fall asleep between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.. I find that limiting my screen time and getting my schoolwork done during the day has helped the most.

Food Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?

    Jt Bondaruk's avatar
    Jt Bondaruk 10/29/2024 7:22 PM
A lack of access to nutritious food can affect the health of a community. By this, I mean that individuals within the community will have more health issues like Diabetes, obesity, etc. On top of this, it makes it so the individuals within that community lose their cultural knowledge and general knowledge of food. Having more nutritious food can cause a community to have a better understanding of food in general and culturally. On top of this, it can cause communities to value healthy food more, pushing legislation to be more mindful of food.

As this section focuses on Air and Water pollutants, I'll also focus on them. Firstly, Air pollutants were broken down into UV Index, Greenhouse Gases, and ICIS-Air. UV Index is a reference to the level of Ultraviolet Radiation (UV Radiation) that one may be exposed to on any given day. The higher the level, the more harmful it is to us. Greenhouse Gases are gases that absorb Infrared Radiation. They heat or raise the heat of the planet's surface. ICIS-Air is a dataset that "contains compliance and permit data for stationary sources of air pollution regulated by EPA, state and local air pollution agencies." From my understanding, it's the data that agencies receive on air pollution that's from stationary sources. Secondly, Water pollutants were broken down into ICR, PCS/ICIS, and SDWIS. ICR is an acronym for Information Collecture Rule, which requires water systems to collect samples to report microbial and disinfection byproducts. PCS/ICIS is also an acronym. PCS stands for Permit Compliance System, while ICIS stands for Integrated Compliance Information System. These are databases that collect information on which companies have been issued permits to discharge wastewater into rivers. Finally, SDWIS is an acronym for Safe Drinking Water Information System. They collect data and information about public water systems and their violations of EPA's drinking water regulations.

Nature Learn About the Impact of Old Refrigerants
Why are old refrigerant gases so harmful to our environment?

    Jt Bondaruk's avatar
    Jt Bondaruk 10/29/2024 5:31 PM
Old refrigerant gases harm the ozone layer in the atmosphere, which in turn harms our environment. New policies are being implemented to move away from equipment that uses these gases to cleaner gases. On top of this, they are trying to have manufacturers be more responsible for older equipment.

In what ways can you increase the positive impacts and decrease the negative impacts of your financial investments?

    Jt Bondaruk's avatar
    Jt Bondaruk 10/22/2024 7:12 PM
The main way that the sources discussed was using ethical and sustainable investment strategies. In other words, the sources stressed the importance of investing one's money into stocks that align with one's morality when it pertains to ethics and sustainability. Many investment firms offer investment portfolios that are more ethical and sustainable than traditional S&P 500 or similar investment portfolios. The more ethical and sustainable portfolios have similar returns to regular portfolios, so it's ultimately up to the individual to dictate if their portfolio will have a positive or negative impact
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Jt Bondaruk's avatar
    Jt Bondaruk 10/22/2024 6:16 PM
The biggest motivational factor that has inspired me to consider switching to an EV, Hybrid, or PHEV is owning a 2004 Lincoln Navigator. The Lincoln gets an average of 14 mpg, is almost 20 years old, and requires premium gasoline (high octane gas). This is my first car, and it's had at least three owners. I'm not looking to buy a new vehicle until the Lincoln dies, as I think that's more unsustainable than sticking with my car. But as the car is getting older and older, and the parts are becoming more scarce, there will eventually be a day when the cost of fixing the Lincoln outweighs the cost of purchasing a new or used car. As this will eventually happen, I wanted to be proactive with my research rather than reactive.

    Waste Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Jt Bondaruk's avatar
    Jt Bondaruk 10/22/2024 5:04 PM
According to the sources that were provided, individuals who are minorities or who are a part of lower socioeconomic status are the most susceptible to living in regions that contain landfills and other waste sites. There aren't many superfund facilities in Oregon, but the largest one I found was near the Portland-Troutdale Airport. For Hazardous Waste Facilities, they are predominantly found between the cities of Milwaukie and Vancouver. Water Discharge Facilities seem to be evenly distributed throughout Oregon. Air Pollution Facilities and Brownfield Facilities are predominantly found in the Northern part of Portland.

Seeing how much water my household and I use daily was eye-opening. It made me think of all the unnecessary water usage that we all use. It didn't change my view, but it made it more apparent. Along with intriguing my curiosity to research more sustainable ways for water consumptions as a whole.

With social media becoming more and more prevalent within society, our news and political debates have become more and more hostile. We could find common ground between our political differences if we could all remember and apply constructive communication.
