    Today is the day everyone
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it often difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places?

    Andrew Grillot's avatar
    Andrew Grillot 10/27/2021 7:04 AM
Because we only see the end result. People only see the ground beef in the grocery store, not the years and thousands of gallons of water and feed and methane emissions it took to grow the cow.
  • Reflection Question
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I guess whatever I do now. You can identify with anything you want. Quality > Quantity.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

You know what I really found was that recycling isn't the best way to do it. Reduce, reuse, recycle is in order of effectiveness. Most recycled items end up in a landfill anyway.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Launch a Recycling Program
How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

    Andrew Grillot 10/27/2021 6:59 AM
Thinking creatively is the whole point of everything. Every good idea started out because of creativity.
  • Reflection Question
    Nature Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Andrew Grillot 10/27/2021 6:58 AM
Mainly because it's fun. The air smells better. I should probably move back to colorado...
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

https://illinois-epa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=22ba38daca9f417fa1ba47b5245de292 if you want to see a map of chicago landfills here you go. Kind of interesting. I would say the communities closest to them are affected.

I'm seeing lots of news about phthalates in plastic products and shampoos. Look out for those.
