Looking forward to going to the farmers market today to get some locally grown produce! Also want to spend some time meal prepping to reduce my food waste this week and eat more meatless meals

What did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?

My employees and I watched “A Plastic Ocean” which is all about the danger of plastic pollution in our oceans. It was crazy to learn how much plastic is produced and how the mass majority of it ends up in our oceans. Watching the documentary honestly made me feel overwhelmed because it’s easy to feel like “well what can I do about it” when it comes to such big issues.

I've been trying my best to walk everywhere, but did have to take an uber today for a client meeting. Instead of just choosing the cheapest option, I chose the eco-uber to help counteract the carbon emissions from that day!
  • Reflection Question
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I think one way you could express yourself, even still through fashion, is by thrift shopping. You get to give clothing articles new life and can alter them or style them in new, unique ways. It's always fun to go into a thrift store and see what you can find
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

It was actually surprisingly easy. Instead of flying to Philly for the holidays, my boyfriend and I decided to take Amtrak instead. It's something I've always wanted to do, but because of the added travel time, never did. We have a couple extra days off during the holidays to spare, so we thought it'd be the perfect time!

We were able to actually save money compared to the cost of our flights and we know it's much better for the environment

Today I spent about an hour researching fast fashion and its effects on the environment for a client's project. It was interesting to learn all the different ways fast fashion impacts our environment. I used to think it was just due to the growth of throwaway culture and constantly buying new clothes, but it's so much more than that. Definitely want to look into more sustainable options for next time I go shopping!

Anybody have any local sustainable businesses they'd recommend?
  • Reflection Question
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

    Caroline Hess's avatar
    Caroline Hess 10/12/2021 9:41 PM
Prior moving to Chicago, I would say this definitely described my own transportation habits. Now that I live in the city, I only rely on driving maybe 5% of the time. Between walking, biking, and the train, it's more convenient to walk! We even plan on returning our car at the end of the month because we barely use it

In what ways can you increase the positive impacts and decrease the negative impacts of your financial investments?

Moving forward, I really want to spend more time researching the ethics and sustainability behind the companies I invest in. Not only their environmental impact, but also which politicians/causes they're donating to, how they treat their employees, etc.

Caroline, so do I!  I have a personal portfolio of 10 diff stocks, only 1 of what I know about their ethics and sustainability practices....HPQ~!

To what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

    Caroline Hess 10/12/2021 9:31 PM
I'm probably still not aware of the full impact of toxic cleaning products, but it was interesting to learn that they could cause headaches, allergies, etc. I have a lot of issues with eye irritation and headaches, so I'm curious to see if switching to organic cleaning products has an effect on that.
