Melissa's actions
Energy
Calculate the Carbon Footprint of my Household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Community
Sign Up to Vote
I will make sure I’m registered to vote. While I’m at it, I’ll sign up to help others register too!
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cups to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
Processed foods can be less nutritious for our bodies and take more energy and water to produce, which can create more waste, pollution, and offer less benefit to our health. I will enjoy 1 meals per day free of processed foods.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 8 gallons (32 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow shower-head.
Water
Eco-Friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 10 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Energy
Learn About Energy Issues on the Ballot
I will spend 10 minutes learning about local or national energy issues that will be on the voting ballot this fall.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentaries about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
Access to affordable, nutritious food is a food justice issue. I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work, on campus and/or in the spaces I frequent.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
Organic farming practices are healthier and safer for our planet, animals, and people. I will enjoy 3 meals cooked with organic ingredients per day.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 0 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.
Waste
Snack Time!
Action is to recycle candy and snack wrappers at collection bins in kitchens on 1, 2, and 3rd floors. I am choosing this action to bring awareness to unnecessary waste and challenge staff to do this daily as this call to action incorporates us to do the walk on the BRI Facilities Sustainability Road Map and have some daily exercise in the work place as well!
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Melissa Hutton 10/31/2024 2:45 PMI think anyone can complete this challenge and incorporate it in their everyday lives. It all comes down to "time" It is time consuming to stick to green habits but the reward is so fulfilling. This Eco Challenge proves that if you chose this category I am sure you can see after 31 days what an impact you are making and how making the time, makes all the difference. Time spent can be impactful for all these categories and offset negative outcomes in the years to come! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsWhat is your perceotion of organic food? After cooking with and eating organic food, has your perception changed?
Melissa Hutton 10/31/2024 2:36 PMMy perception of organic food is like a fine wine. It may cost more but you get what you pay for! I use to not buy as much organic products because of rising costs, but after incorporating more organic produce in my diet, I feel better and in my opinion, our health is priceless :)-
Toby Sota 10/31/2024 7:50 PMIf I’m buying meat, I’ve done the research and will only buy organic grass fed!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Melissa Hutton 10/31/2024 2:33 PMI believe it's true, just like the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away!" there is definitely truth in buying foods from the source and finding nourishment in whole foods :)-
Joelle Trubowitz 10/31/2024 2:55 PMagreed, be proactive instead of reactive!
