Sandesh's actions
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Simplicity
Research Impact Investing
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and determine if it is right for me.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Plant Trees
I will plant 4 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Nature
Learn About the Impact of Old Refrigerants
I will spend 60 minutes researching the impact of old harmful refrigerants on our environment.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Energy
Calculate the Carbon Footprint of my Household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Energy
Invite a Friend to Calculate the Carbon Footprint of their Household
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Energy
Calculate My Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Community
Learn About Constructive Communication
I will spend 60 minutes learning about constructive communication.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 3 conversations.
Community
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
I will watch 2 documentaries about systemic racism to learn more about how it affects us and the planet.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Community
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 10 hours in my community during the challenge.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 4 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Transportation
Work From Home
I will work from home 2 days to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Food
Locally-Sourced Meals
I will source 2 meals each day from local producers.

Kerry Keck 10/27/2024 9:39 AMThe sentiment is one I can agree with. I would love to see Mr. Bezos put some action behind his words.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Sandesh Lewis 10/25/2024 7:27 AMOne relatively easy food choice I can make that would do more good than harm is to support local and seasonal produce. This would have a positive impact because locally grown food has a smaller transportation footprint and seasonal produce usually requires less energy to grow compared to off-season crops. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Sandesh Lewis 10/24/2024 10:36 AMWhat I've learnt through recent research is that you can preserve a variety of food for later use and in most cases, you can preserve them for months.
It's only now that I have come to realize the scale of the positive ecological impact that preserving of seasonal food can have.
I would therefore mainly like to preserve seasonal fruits and vegetables like Mangoes, Pineapples, Berries, Tomatoes, Carrots, Corn and Capsicum. -
Sandesh Lewis 10/24/2024 10:24 AM“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.”
– Gandhi
Let's start with ourselves and our individual greed - let's be mindful every time we buy something, every time we use something, every time we discard something. Let's not forget: Every little action of ours has a profound impact on our planet... -
Sandesh Lewis 10/21/2024 12:47 PMWe have neglected our planet so much that from now on, Every day is Earth Day.-
Hassnain Khan 10/21/2024 1:59 PMYou're absolutely right. The state of our planet is a daily concern now, and the idea of treating every day like Earth Day is a mindset we all need to embrace. Every small action contributes to the bigger picture of healing and sustaining our environment!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in My CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Sandesh Lewis 10/18/2024 12:40 PMThere are a few things I could do to help my community become more sustainable. One of the things to do is to promote and support local food initiatives.
Starting a community garden - Encouraging people to grow their own vegetables and herbs reduces reliance on long-distance food supply chains, which can lower carbon emissions from transportation.
Additionally, buying local produce reduces the environmental impact of food production and supports the local economy.
By encouraging local, sustainable food practices, we can help reduce the carbon footprint associated with food production and foster a sense of community resilience. -
Sandesh Lewis 10/18/2024 12:33 PM“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”
– Robert Swan-
Shayne Magdoff 10/18/2024 1:22 PMIt's like the saying - if good men do nothing - we all lose. Don't depend on someone to do what you can do.
