I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED 4

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Do at Home

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 2 container(s) out of the landfill each day.

How does your view on water consumption change after completing this action?

I moved into a condo in a town where you get charged for water and it is very expensive. (In the past it was put into a condo fee.) So reality hit when I got my first water bill. I honestly believe that it was the best thing that could have happened. I invested in a high-efficiency Bosch washer and dryer. I looked into how much water my Bosch dishwasher uses on various cycles (and yes, it uses much less than doing them by hand). I run it more often.

I am putting out the cash for a tankless, on-demand water heater. It's an investment, but I decided any upgrades would be to maintain if it's repairable or improve upon it if it involves water or energy use.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

I have stopped getting straws regardless if I have mine with me. Since I get my groceries delivered, I am at the mercy of the person picking and packing them. I do use the vegetable bags to collect food for my compost but it still pains me to get them when I used to bring my own the store.  And while we get very little takeout and I specifically ask for NO utensils, we continue to get them. If wrapped in plastic, I save them and pass them on, hoping someone will deem them safe enough to use.

When I had to sit down and write about why I was cooking so much meat, it dawned on me that more planning, more weekend cooking might do the trick - something that got away from me during the hotter months. My wife and I were planning dinner. She said, "Do we have any tomato soup? Carrot soup?" Those I usually cook and put in the freezer. We were out. Why not be consistent in stocking up on meals to freeze and thaw?  And why not make it vegetarian/vegan? This is the perfect time of year to heat up the kitchen via extra cooking. A no-brainer.

I joined the challenge to reinforce the good, and put a spotlight on the harmful (for me and the planet). It's a constant blinking light in my brain this time of year. Usually I walk away with one key thing that makes its way into my life.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

You'd have to live under a rock not to know how eating meat affects the planet's health, your health, your family's health. So the question remains, why do I find myself cooking it and consuming it? Lazy? Not really. Family demands it? Pretty much. Cooking two different meals is difficult when you are cooking ALL the meals and working full time. We do takeout maybe twice a month.
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Carry my Trash
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

I don't go out much so bringing trash home isn't really necessary. What I do at home is more important. With every meal I prepare my compost bin or worm bin gets fed.
  • Reflection Question
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

I try to remember that every time i buy something I have to take care of it (I am not a buy-cheap person so I take care of whatever I do get.) But maintaining an item, be it a WaterPik or more towels (where to store? Always an issue ... and how many towel rags can you have?) helps me say "NO more!" and I stop.

Difficult week. Working from home still makes for less trash, normally home cooked food, often from scratch. Last night was takeout and I was blown away by all the plastic containers. The two largest were compostable but the others were not and the were several small ones. Fortunately they did not include plastic forks.

Here because I do this every year and every year I find that I need to be reminded of what is important to me. Not that I don't practice a lot of this year-round but I get energized reading all of the positive things other people are doing rather than battling those around me to simply do the next right thing.
