I have decided to re-emphasize the importance of listening before trying to convey my point. Often we are fixated on getting our own point across and being understood, however a great deal of benefits can be experienced from listening first. If I try to make this a habit, I am convinced that I will find the communication process to be significantly easier, as well as becoming a more effective leader in the long-term.

The healing and renewal section of the Ecochallenge has been a great reminder for me to identify what is most important in my life and prioritize those things first.

These last few weeks I have regularly been setting aside time for activities that my family and I enjoy, such as hiking, dancing and cooking together. Hobbies help me relax, take my mind off of work and recharge.
  • Reflection Question
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Core Values
What are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?

    Jon Peterson's avatar
    Jon Peterson 10/26/2021 9:07 PM
When I think about core values that can be easily unpacked into all the other values in my company and in life, I settle on these top 3 core values are: WISDOM - Wisdom is the combination of knowledge and character. PERFORMANCE - I’ve got to perform. LOVE - The most important value to build high-trust relationships.

I have decided to start GOING NAKED! That is right. I have ditched the plastic bags in the produce area and now leave the fruit and veggies loose and uncovered (naked).

I don't live on a farm, or even have a big backyard, but I started the eco-friendly disposal method of composting.  Recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem, which keeps food out of landfills and waterways while making the garden greener.

I am not recommending anyone eat curdled yogurt for the sake of saving the environment, but if you’re tossing bread and OJ as soon as they hit the sell-by date, you could be wasting a lot of perfectly good grub. The Ecochallenge has helped me to put a focus on this.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Help Others
In your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?

    Jon Peterson's avatar
    Jon Peterson 10/26/2021 3:55 PM
People living in environments characterized by high levels of economic and social inequality tend to be more exposed to violence and victimization than those living elsewhere.

  • Reflection Question
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

Steve gave me the idea to forage for food in my yard and by doing so I found out that the honey locust seed pods that fell in my yard can be turned into naturally sweet powders for cooking. Maybe I can put this sweet powder on a salad made from the flower petals off my hibiscus tree.
