    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

I have learned that the waste pickup for my school does not accept napkins as compost items, but all foods and things such banana peels are. Anything that has any food residue cannot be recycled. Paper with paint cannot be recycled, and paper with tape cannot either. You can rip the section of paper that has tape on it off, and recycle the rest of the paper! The most difficult part of recycling for me is that if I have a plastic cup, I need to be able to rinse it out if I want to recycle it, which is not always an option based on where I'm at.

How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I can prevent myself from accumulating more things in the future by being mindful with my purchases and make purchases based on need, not wants.
  • Reflection Question
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Pollution and human activities causing climate change are impacting the health of water systems. Coral reefs are dying as the water temperature and acidification are increasing. Marine life that relies on the coral reefs is greatly impacted and is causing a chain reaction to occur. It is imperative that anthropogenic disturbances to nature are addressed and fixed.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

The new food waste program at West Campus is educating the whole student body, including myself, on all of the appropriate things that can go in the compost bins. I've noticed that by just taking a few seconds to open a container of food and emptying it into the compost bin and discarding the container in the garbage bin, the garbage bins have been less full meaning less is going to the landfill, which is always a good thing!

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Practicing gratitude keeps me motivated to work for a better world because it makes people feel appreciated and acknowledged for their good deeds, which encourages them to continue to practice kindness!
