Nadejda's Actions

Waste

Find Local Recycling Depots

Do at Home

I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.

Completed
One-Time Action

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Do at Home

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 60 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Do at Home

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

At a minimum replacing all light bulbs with energy efficient ones is an easy fix for reducing consumption. Also switches that sense occupancy are helpful not to forget the lights on

    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

The most difficult part is making sure the kids understand the importance of recycling and reducing use of non-recyclable packaging.

    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

The challenge is making myself to bring my reusable cup to a coffee shop or on an airplane and ask them to pour my drink in it to get it to-go.
I generally bring my own coffee/tea in a thermos mug to the office and do not buy unless I really have to (like at airports).
I feel I'm making a difference however small it is - maybe if more people start doing it it won't feel that awkward (bringing your own cup to the place you buy your drink to go) and we will all be doing something good.
