Lot of good things I learned in this go around. I'm grateful for this annual challenge.

The greatest challenge I had was shopping at a small business owned by a member of an under-represented population. I had thought it would be easy to find lists of them in my area but it's mostly word of mouth. And then I was balancing that challenge with my daily challenge to buy only needs and not mere wants. I continue to patronize a female, minority-owned small business sole prop and I am making more of an effort to support local over large chains.

It's a busy time of year, but I'm happy I took the challenge this year! It was especially helpful to replace social media time with outdoor time.

Balancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life Balance
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

I feel like I am more present both at work and during off-work hours when I find the proper work-life balance. It allows me to focus on work when I am there and to be "off of work" when I am not in the office. It is great to not take work "home with me." It makes me more available to my friends and family.

Cultivating Communities Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

Instead of flying to a work meeting out of state I am going to drive (my hybrid). My husband is now coming along as well! :)  I actually enjoy driving and love road trips. I am not a fan of flying; so this was an easy change to make.

There are more options for convenient recycling in my neighborhood.  I have downloaded an app that gives guidelines and even allows you to find alterative recycling options for specific items like large furniture and prescription drugs.

Hey guys!  This was a great challenge and I appreciate all who participated!  Hopefully we do it again next year!  I hope everyone is taking away a few things and at least implementing a few changes in their lives.  Whether it's just getting to know your neighbors, picking up trash in your neighborhood, or running the faucet less, every little bit helps!

I agree it was a great challenge! I learned a lot during the June Plastic Free Ecochallenge, but I learned even more from this project. And I was gratified when I shared what I gleaned and people responded positively.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Balancing Consumption Less Screen Time
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

Have you seen the pictures of people with the hump neck syndrome?  Because when you look at your phone your head is in a downward position, people's posture has started to reflect that.  On top of that, people that spend time inside on screens aren't able to develop social skills in my opinion that are conducive for living in the real world.  We also need Vitamin D.  Connecting to nature and others is important.

I have learned so much about my use and waste of food, water, co2, and materials. There are still places I can improve, especially with my use of transportation, but I have significantly reduced my consumption over the last three years.
