Seattle Children's - Green Team Feed

BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I'm so glad I participated in the ecochallenge this year! I will absolutely do it again. I appreciate the resources that the ecochallenge team has available in the action tabs; I feel like I learned the most when I used those. Here's to carrying these habits with me through the year!

Regenerating Nature Volunteer in My Community
What event did you volunteer for and what was the experience like for you?

I volunteer weekly at a young adult shelter. Often the tasks that I do for the shelter can feel mundane, but they fit into the larger picture of creating a more equitable environment for the unhoused people in my community. We work to meet basic needs like food and a safe place to sleep so that our guests can have capacity to advocate for themselves.

Balancing Consumption What is Sustainable Fashion?
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I think I do a good job already of expressing myself with clothes that I thrift, trade, and repair to keep in good condition. I put effort into cycling my clothes in and out of the secondhand market. I also like to make sure that I can use clothes for a long time. To look for more inspiration to disengage further from fast fashion, I read the 2022 Fashion Transparency Index, which I highly recommend! I decided to take the principles used to create the index and apply them to my thrifting habits, so I researched the business practices of the thrift stores I like to see how they are following through on their commitments to sustainability and community investment.

Cultivating Communities Volunteer During My Local Election
Why do you volunteer during elections? What meaning does it give to your civic life?

I typically serve as a poll worker in my local area precinct. This year, I was unable to do so due to traveling/other obligations. I was grateful for the encouragement to find another way to volunteer.

I have been a relatively inactive member of the Working Families Party.  During this election cycle, it was MOST important to me to be involved because I live in Georgia. This election is very important to our future and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve.

Also, my father was a very politically-involved person.  He passed away in 2018 but his birthday was 11/04.  It's always near elections and that makes it that much more personal to me.  He would be proud to see me involved.

Lastly, it means that my sons get to witness my engagement and know that it takes more than simply voting.

Balancing Consumption Reduce Social Media Use
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

My social media consumption greatly impacts my mental health. I notice very quickly when I consume more than normal that I become more anxious.

    Nourishing Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

This does surprise me as I know others who waste a large amount of food since I will often times take items to avoid it from going into the trash. I would use the $1500 on a trip.

    Nourishing Food Compost Food Scraps
As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Teresa Tran's avatar
    Teresa Tran 10/26/2022 2:11 PM
Because our compost bin is so small, I notice how much food scraps I am throwing away. It also makes me notice how small our trash output is in comparison
