Why is it often difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places?
Marketing, capitalism and greed. As consumers we are (in USA especially) offered a plethora of choices - in stores and even more on line. NEVER are we told the impact of palm oil on destruction of biodiversity or the loss of human lives to create plastics in the gulf south. It's a really hot button with me and I try to really hard to not get too "preachy" when I learn these bitter truths. Way too much of what we purchase is instant waste - look at holidays coming up! Perhaps we could try simpler, kinder ways to honor the dark time of year. (Dark in North America) Parts of my cranky old lady would love to just skip it entirely - but then there's those old family recipes for Christmas baking . . . Wonder what the impact is of those green cherries in fruitcake?!? HA!
