Matthew 's actions
Water
Collecting Rain Water to Water Indoor plants
My goal is to reduce the water I use and this is a small step in limiting my water footprint.
Community
Join a Club at OSU
This action will help me find a community and diversify my interests.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straws out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Health
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 3 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags when Shopping
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Energy
Switch To Cold Water for Laundry
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Matthew Averill 10/19/2025 11:01 AMI will invest that money into energy-saving appliances in my home and other strategies for reducing my carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Matthew Averill 10/19/2025 11:00 AMFor me, it would just depend on how many items I had. If I were dead set on never using plastic bags, I would ask for paper or go in and buy a reusable bag in the store. You could also carry some in your car for whenever you are on the go; this way, there are no issues with forgetting them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Matthew Averill 10/19/2025 10:56 AMI love eating my fruits and vegetables, so this action comes pretty easily. Didn't try any new fruits, but I definitely made sure to have some sort of fruit with every meal. When I can eat healthy, it makes me perform better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Matthew Averill 10/12/2025 8:21 PMI can reduce the number of times I have to drive my car. I can reuse the dining hall's eco-friendly to-go boxes. I will refuse plastic straws, water bottles, and bags. I will repair clothes with holes in them. I could repurpose recyclable materials into an aesthetically pleasing room decoration. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Matthew Averill 10/02/2025 7:40 PMBeing able to walk on campus is so refreshing. It gives me a reset between classes while also being able to reflect on how my mental health is.
