    Waste
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

When it comes to water, I always use a reusable water bottle, and I never go anywhere without it. Growing up in Washington and now moving to Oregon for school I do believe myself very lucky to have this luxury. I have never had to worry about the quality of the water coming out of the tap. Where I struggle is other drinks, I love Arizona green tea and I do have a big Costco pack of those single use bottles. This is where I do increase the use of the plastic bottles however, I do not drink/ consume these nearly as much as I consume water.

    Transportation
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

While I do have my car in Corvallis now I have learned from my freshman year that Corvallis is an incredibly walkable city. I never ever drive to class, I either walk or ride my bike if I am running behind. I only drive when it is a necessity by a time constraint/ the distance is really just too long to walk with my busy college student schedule.

What kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?

I think that for the most part my friends do care about climate change, however, they need help to realize just how much they can have an impact. Even myself, I believe I still have so much to learn about ways to be more sustainable and contribute to climate change less. That is why I think it is incredibly important to have thee discussions with friends and family, we talk in class about how to be more sustainable but without spreading the information far and wide, change will not actually be possible.

    Health
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Beth Clary 's avatar
    Beth Clary 10/12/2025 11:22 PM
I have consistently worked for awhile to eliminate single use plastics. I never use straws anymore, I own reusable ones. I never use single use plastic water bottles and I never use single use grocery bags. However, I do always get my dutch drinks, and I should make a better effort to bring a reusable cup. I always love to have a drink, it is my treat for days to get me through my classes and I imagine that the cups add up to be a lot throughout the years I have been alive. I should continue to make the effort to stop using single use plastic cups because many stores have the option to use reusable ones.

I'm still working on removing my use of single-use items. I've worked to reduce my usage by bringing a reusable bag with me when shopping (groceries, gift buying, etc.). I've also started putting all my produce in one produce bag vs. a bag for each item (my grocery store has us put stickers on the bag to generate a barcode and weight). I'm happy to say I've eliminated disposable coffee cup usage by bringing travel mug with me and keeping a backup mug at work in case I forget to bring one.

    Energy
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Beth Clary 's avatar
    Beth Clary 10/12/2025 11:12 PM
There are a many different sources of electricity in Corvallis. I know that Oregon State houses many different fields of solar panels, I do not believe that these help to power the entire city but they are a source. Oregon as a state politically supports renewable energy so there are more options of renewable energy for Corvallis. I know Oregon also uses wind and hydro power. I would say though that a majority of the energy produced likely comes from the power grid, which does not positively impact the environment and is not sustainable for the future of our planet. For humans in particular, the continued use of energy in this form will be horrendous for future generations of the human population.
