Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Simplicity
Meditate or Create a Moment of Silence
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 5 minutes each day to reflect on things important to me.
Community
Learn About Constructive Communication
I will spend 60 minutes learning about constructive communication.
Community
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
I will watch 2 documentaries about systemic racism to learn more about how it affects us and the planet.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully without Distractions
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Waste
Advocate For Better Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Water
Practice Eco-Friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 15 hours of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Waste
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 3 conversations.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentaries about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Share My Why
Take the People's Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Energy
Upgrade My Windows or Weatherstripping
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Simplicity
Find or Join a Local Sharing Economy
If my community does not have a tool library or other sharing economy options, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Simplicity
Organize a Course on Simple Living
I will organize Ecochallenge.org's discussion course A Different Way: Living Simply in a Complex World with my family, friends, co-workers, or classmates.
Community
Learn About Native Communities in My Area
I will use the resource links provided and spend 30 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow can you use Ecochallenge.org programs to help mobilize your community to take action toward a sustainable future?
Glenda Harrison 10/31/2025 7:45 PMI have participated in courses over the years, so I know that these can help bring change. We get to see things through new eyes, which helps us rethink our priorities and how we can make changes for good (positive good) and for long-lasting good! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Glenda Harrison 10/31/2025 7:41 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
I'm not a spring chicken, and I grew up being outdoors every chance I could. It's more difficult for me to get around these days so I spend a lot of time binging Britbox/PBS and knitting, but the challenge has encouraged me to get back outdoors - even if it's only for a little bit each day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?
Glenda Harrison 10/31/2025 7:38 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
I enjoyed trying new dishes. I'm not fond of beef and have wanted to do this for a long time!-
Ray Taylor 10/31/2025 9:52 PMIt has been fun trying new dishes! Portland has so many cool began restaurants. I'm in love with Whole Bowl.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Glenda Harrison 10/31/2025 7:36 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
I've canned fruits and veg in the past, but I'm trying my hand at pickling the leftover green tomatoes in the garden (I'm also going to fry some green tomatoes, too... something my dad did in the past). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?
Glenda Harrison 10/31/2025 12:48 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
I try to fit too much into my day, so by I average about 5.5 hours of sleep - prior to the challenge. Some things that have helped me were the mindfulness challenge, and I'm not getting an average of about 6.5 hours (still low). Focusing on mindfulness helped me sleep better and not wake up quite as often. I still have a way to go to get enough sleep, but it is a small step forward! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Glenda Harrison 10/27/2025 5:43 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
My state is in a drought zone, though my area is not as dry. What's crazy is that we do get a lot of rain, but rain doesn't always fall where it is needed most. -
Glenda Harrison 10/26/2025 1:09 PM- Earth Advocate 📣
The challenge has encouraged me to prioritize several activities. Even thought I will try to continue them, I also know how easy it is to slip out of good habits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Glenda Harrison 10/25/2025 9:23 AM- Earth Advocate 📣
We had a shovel that is in good shape, but it broke at the handle. The handle is not very long, but I was able to put handle back on so it can still be used.
