Therese's actions
Food
Switch to Seasonal, Local Food (Voya Challenge)
Support local farmers and reduce carbon emissions from transportation by buying fall produce like squash, apples, and pumpkins.
Waste
Compost Autumn Leaves (Voya Challenge)
Instead of bagging leaves, compost them to enrich your garden soil and reduce landfill waste.
Share My Why
Take the People's Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 10 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.
Water
Install a Toilet Tank Bank
Reduciré la cantidad de agua que se usa en cada descarga y ahorraré hasta 41 litros (11 galones) de agua por día al instalar un depósito ahorrador para el tanque del baño.
Food
Follow a Whole Food Diet
Processed foods can be less nutritious for our bodies and take more energy and water to produce, which can create more waste, pollution, and may offer fewer health benefits. I will enjoy 2 meals per day free of processed foods.
Water
Learn About and Consider Installing Greywater Systems
I will install a greywater catchment system in my home.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Waste
Advocate For Better Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
Organic farming practices are healthier and safer for our planet, animals, and people. I will enjoy 3 meals cooked with organic ingredients per day.
Community
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community during the challenge.
Waste
Research Local Waste and Landfill Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Go Paperless and Opt Out of Junk Mail
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Health
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 1 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground and Travel Differently
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (e.g., telepresence, vacation locally).
Waste
Complete a Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will share a photo and reflection of this action on the feed.
Waste
Visit a Local Recycling Center, Landfill, or Transfer Station
Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Waste
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Waste
Learn About and Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

I met with a dietician today online and she gave me some whole food goals, exercise range goals, talked about the plat method, eating more protein, not counting vegetable from the garden as calories. We are going to keep meeting on a regular basis and this will keep me accountable and motivated.-

So far, I have eaten more fruits & veggies, locally grown that are organic and whole foods, exercised more regularly, conserved water and energy and reduced the packaged items I purchase. I have spent less and saved money overall. This is what I have achieved.-

I could eat fruit ALL day long. Even with the challenge, I still struggle with veggies. Shopping organic has been a god sent. I feel a lot better. Good Job Therese! Let's keep it going after the challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWho is most affected by environmental degradation or environmental irresponsibility in your community? How are they affected? What actions can you take to support those affected by these issues?
Therese Herzog 10/29/2025 3:15 PMEveryone is affected, though people in lower income brackets cannot afford to fix problems that affect them, on their own as easily, perhaps. I am a Sierra Club member, and we work to fight environmental injustice through local government. -

Eating whole, organic, locally grown food takes a little more effort. I feel better when I do. Sleep is another important ingredient and makes all the difference in my day. -

I enjoyed the reset and re-invigoration to stay involved, healthy, planet protecting and conserving every day. -

Voya challenged us to compost our autumn leaves. This is easy for me as I dead head flowers in pots and break up dead leaves and return them to the pot for soil cover. I live in a townhome with a high deck in back that gets most the leaves from the woods nearby. I can sweep them off the deck and they land in the bushes near the creek helping mulch those plants. I could throw them away, but I think this is better for the environment. Maybe I am just lazy!-
Payton Messner 10/27/2025 7:53 AMAdding them to flowerpots is a great idea! I have a compost bin I plan to add my leaves to this week :)

Today I volunteered at a community festival. There were many educational booths that promoted sustainability, sustainable and eco-friendly or organic products, which was great to see. As far as festivals go, a lot of trash was generated and I did not see recycling bins offered. I will reach out to organizers to suggest for future events. -

The challenge is going well. The seasons are finally changing so I am glad to be on the path of better habits as we leave summer behind.-

What is your favorite newly developed habit? Mine is the morning exercise routine which is mostly stretching but it's like the day isn't started until I complete the routine now.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Therese Herzog 10/24/2025 6:25 AM- Community Builder 🤝
We have a waste collection site at the edge of town. They recycle and donate used goods. The landfill is between two towns on land away from communities. For now, I do not see one community affected more than another. -

I found an accountability partner at work, so that helps. I will continue to educate myself to stay on track and join the next Ecochallenge!
