Cultivating Communities
Share My Habits & Actions
Each day, I will make my sustainable habits or actions visible through a lawn sign, bumper sticker, pin, t-shirt, social media or other ways.
Regenerating Nature
Explore My Area
Each day, I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, which might include a park, water body, trail, etc.
Regenerating Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside and often with electronics with quality time outside walking, exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, observing nature, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Regenerating Nature
Advocate for Forest Protection
I will contact 5 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests, improves their ability to sequester carbon, and supports biodiversity.
Regenerating Nature
Calculate My Water Footprint
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Karl Horak 10/18/2022 9:28 AMOut of town relatives visiting has really thrown a wrench into my run of check-ins. Now trying to get back on the bicycle, so to speak. -
Karl Horak 10/09/2022 1:38 PMPruned the big Japanese black pine into a 'niwaki'. On it's way to becoming a beautiful cloud-pruned tree. -
Karl Horak 10/09/2022 1:36 PMPrepping the garden for fall. Bringing tender tropical plants inside before it gets too cold. Still feeding the box turtles... wonder when they will go underground for the winter?

REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Karl Horak 10/05/2022 12:41 PMBeing a docent at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden gives me plenty of chances to enjoy the outdoors and educate other visitors. I also participate with a group of citizen scientists in making observations in Nature's Notebook. That's a great way to foster a sense of place and be mindful of the seasons. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Share My Habits & ActionsWhat was the most fun or joyful way you have seen others share their positive sustainability actions and habits?

REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Karl Horak 10/05/2022 11:15 AMManaged to get in a lot of late summer - early fall work in the garden despite the rain. God knows, we need the moisture. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Calculate My Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Karl Horak 10/05/2022 3:12 AMThe water footprint tool I used was fairly coarse-grained. For example, it did not differentiate between a garden that is watered with a sprinkler and my drip irrigation system. -
Karl Horak 10/05/2022 3:02 AMI guess the plastic-free ecochallenges have taken root. Now I can't pass one up. That said, it's great to get points for things I already do or am interested in doing.
