To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Cultivating Communities Donate Blood
    Why do you donate blood?

    Zed Jones's avatar
    Zed Jones 10/25/2022 11:04 PM
Donating blood is a tricky one. FDA guidelines prevent a lot of people in my community from donating based on prejudiced health concerns. But blood and blood-products are still important resources to share. And honestly, most places will compensate with gift cards or something like that... in addition to the feeling of helping build a stronger healthier community. It helps.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Cultivating Communities Use Muscle Power & Alternative Ways to Travel
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Zed Jones's avatar
    Zed Jones 10/25/2022 11:01 PM
I have a 70/30 interaction with using public transit/walking/biking to something. Most of the time it's very pleasant, but sometimes it's nerve-wracking because I'm running late. It takes a lot of energy to work, study, make my own food, and try to make sustainable choices, and sometimes using a car cuts my commute time down by 45m one way. I'm privileged to have it.
But when I'm not anxious or exhausted or requiring a mobility aid, walking is superb, even in the dreary PNW ;]
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Balancing Consumption Track My Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

    Zed Jones's avatar
    Zed Jones 10/24/2022 6:36 PM
I'm probably not going to change my habits much. My work is seasonal, my budget kinda tight, and I participate in food trades and skillshares to meet many of my wants. Most of my purchases are based firmly in needs, but it has been a neat reflection to observe as I've been tracking what I buy, and when. (This too is seasonal- right now is my time to stock up on teas, winter squash, meat (from a local farm!) as I prep for the coming winter months!)

I got my teas at New Seasons, but I know there are some tra vendors at the PSU farmers markets, and other markets in SE, just not any I work at. I mostly stock up on winter squash, sweet potatoes, onions and dehydrate/can fruit to make it shelf stable. Have a big jar of raisins and dried cherries/apples/pears. I dehydrate small hot peppers too. Been trying to store beets but trimming off the leaves so they don't pull moisture from the root has proven tricky.

Zed, I found a farm selling anything left in the field for $1 a pound, and there is a lot!!! Eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, all kinds of peppers, black eyed peas, etc.

Where do you get tea? What do you stock up on that does not required refrigeration? I have a very small freezer.

Today (and this coming week) provides lots of opportunity to carpool, and that feels good for the environment - and my wallet!

These few weeks have flown by, I won't make some of my bigger goals... but it's been gratifying to track my daily accomplishments!

    Regenerating Nature Spend Time Outside
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Zed Jones's avatar
    Zed Jones 10/13/2022 10:08 PM
This has been so easy to do with the nice weather we're having, despite the AQI. I wonder if I'll be able to keep it up when the rains return.

  • Zed Jones's avatar

Well, there's room for improvement,  but I'm still coming in below the national average for my daily water footprint, so that feels alright!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Regenerating Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

    Zed Jones's avatar

A friend has a garden space in her yard; I've been trying to help her learn what indigenous polination-friendly plants will help restore the integrity of the clay/soil in her sideyard, as well as what might have medicinal properties. Yarrow's looking great!

Technically, I donated platelets, not whole blood - but platelets are an important resource in blood-based health solutions!
