Andrea's actions
Nature
Do a Nature Activity
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 20 minutes each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Water
Collect Rain Water for Outdoor Use
I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cups to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Health
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 60 hours of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.
Simplicity
Buy Used Clothes Instead of New
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will buy my clothes at second-hand stores when I shop.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Water
Take 5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Andrea Kloess 10/13/2025 8:48 PMI could eat more locally sourced fruits and vegetables than I already do. I have started paying a lot more attention to where things come from, and turns out a lot of my favorite produce is from completely different countries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Andrea Kloess 10/13/2025 8:36 PMThe thing standing in my way right now is that there’s not really a lot of spontaneity of planning when I’m gonna have a coffee or a tea with a reusable mug. Like if I’m at school, sometimes I really want a coffee that day and it’s so easy to just buy one on campus. This next week I’m going to attempt to just bring my mini reusable mug along with me all the time, and I can just get a coffee shop to use that cup instead of a single-use one. It’ll feel a lot better, especially when not throwing away a perfectly good plastic cup after 15 minutes of just having bought it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityDo people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?
Andrea Kloess 10/13/2025 8:26 PMI think people with economic privilege should just be mindful of the amount of things they consume, and how things are made and the resources it took to create that item. It’s just that oftentimes people with economic privilege buy huge clothing hauls from fast fashion brands or redecorate their homes every year that poses a bigger environmental issue— and it’s just not really necessary. I think “reducing” should just be presented to people in a lower socioeconomic status as not wasting the things that they buy or reusing/repurposing, instead of reducing because the amount of things for them isn’t always the issue. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?
Andrea Kloess 10/13/2025 8:18 PMI only get about 7 hours of sleep a night, but I'm aiming to add an extra hour to reach 8 hours. This means I am putting my phone away earlier and if I can't sleep right away, I have a book to read instead. With more sleep I'm hoping to be more present throughout the day and do my schoolwork and job more meaningfully.
