Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Health
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Health
Know My Core Four Biometrics
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Switch To Cold Water for Laundry
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Upgrade Heating and Cooling Units
I will replace inefficient heating and cooling units with energy saving units.
Simplicity
Disconnect From Email Outside of Work Hours
I will only check my email during work hours, using my personal time for endeavors that help me live out my values.
Simplicity
Reflect on My Needs Versus Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Christine Lokiec 10/10/2025 9:51 AMI know from talking with neighbors that my electric bill is less than theirs. I make it a point to ensure lights and electronics are turned off when not needed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Christine Lokiec 10/10/2025 9:49 AMElectricity is very expensive where I live and my understanding is that it's sourced/bought from various places so it's hard to know the impact.-

It is really hard to know! One map that I found recently that I think is really cool is this one: https://app.electricitymaps.com/map/live/fifteen_minutes You can zoom into different parts of the world and see how clean the electric grid is at any given moment. In some parts of the world it'll also show you those electric flows - as I type this, France is selling very clean energy to Germany, which is selling moderately dirty energy to Poland, which is selling very dirty energy to Lithuania. By clicking on a country, you can see what its electricity generation mix is. Then you can also adjust the time slider, to see how everything changes during the day when there's a lot of solar, vs. at night. If you're in the U.S., another map I can really recommend is this one: https://www.eia.gov/electricity/gridmonitor/dashboard/electric_overview/US48/US48. It looks pretty complicated at first, but you can click on what part of the country you're in, and then scroll down to the chart that shows "Electricity generation by energy source." I find it really fascinating to look at! You can check out different parts of the country and see where there's a lot of electricity from solar, wind, natural gas, coal, etc. For example in California, it looks like they don't have a lot of hydropower, but what they do use is saved for overnight, along with their massive battery supply, to support their daytime solar. Then in the Midwest, where I am, there's much less solar, but we're starting to get enough, along with wind, to be able to make a dent in our coal and natural gas generation some days. It's a really fascinating subject to learn about!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityNotice how much time you were spending checking email away from work and make note of that. Now that you have stepped away from it and have not been checking, what changes are you noticing in your thoughts, use of time, stress and energy levels?
Christine Lokiec 10/10/2025 9:47 AMFeel less stressed as I'm not worrying about work as much now that I'm not reading the emails outside of work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicitySocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Christine Lokiec 10/10/2025 9:45 AMRealized that I don't miss it much at all and I focused on the more important connections. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Christine Lokiec 10/06/2025 10:01 AMI've taken on an attitude of focusing on handling the problem instead of procrastinating and knowing what things I can change or influence and what I can't. As long as I know I've given all I can to solve the problem I'm in a good position.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWhat motivated you to schedule or attend your check-up, and how did it make you feel afterward that you completed this action?
Christine Lokiec 10/06/2025 9:59 AMAs I get older making sure I do annual check-ups is more important than ever to ensure I can live a healthier life.-
Amy Sarno 10/06/2025 10:51 AMFor me, it's knowledge around preventative care and having a baseline for bloodwork to better catch anomalies. Also, I schedule my checkup and it's on my calendar, and if it's on my calendar, scheduled and visible, it's something I hold mental space for. I have the attitude that I'm going to that vs. I'll decide if I want to do that later.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Christine Lokiec 10/06/2025 9:58 AMLike I read somewhere, we only have this planet...there is no planet B. I want to do what I can to keep it going for as long as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Christine Lokiec 10/06/2025 9:57 AMPut it towards purchasing more green items like glass containers vs. plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Christine Lokiec 10/06/2025 9:56 AMCreativity comes into play when repurposing clothes that may a little worn but still serviceable. I will reuse older clothing for gardening or cut into pieces to use for cleaning.
