Nellie's actions
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.
Nourishing Food
What is My Food Supply Chain?
I will spend 10 minutes learning about my food supply chains, and complete a food waste audit.
Balancing Consumption
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Regenerating Nature
Complete an Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, work, or other shared space to identify the next steps for saving energy.
Regenerating Nature
Advocate for Forest Protection
I will contact 1 congress people or representatives to advocate for public policy that protects forests, improves their ability to sequester carbon, and supports biodiversity.
Balancing Consumption
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Cultivating Communities
Carpool when going on outdoor adventures that require using a vehicle
I will find a buddy to go with me when going places for hikes/adventures/trips that are more than 100 miles away. This will reduce the overall footprint. Generally we each take our own car.
Regenerating Nature
Calculate My Water Footprint
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Cultivating Communities
Join A Neighborhood Group
I will join my neighborhood association or another local group of decision makers.
Enacting Equity
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
I will watch 1 documentaries about racism and racial injustice.
Nourishing Food
Eat Plant-Based Meals
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nourishing Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste, excess carbon and save money by planning my daily and weekly menus so that I only purchase the ingredients needed.
Cultivating Communities
Use Muscle Power & Alternative Ways to Travel
Each day when I don't need to travel by car, I will use muscle-powered transportation and other alternative forms (e.g., walking, biking, car share, public transit, etc.).
Cultivating Communities
Pull Together Items to Donate
Each day, I will find one or more items I can donate to a local thrift or resale shop.
Cultivating Communities
Practice a Sharing Economy
Each day, I will engage in a sharing economy among my family, friends, and neighbors.

REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Nellie Long 10/26/2022 10:27 AMI have a community garden spot and many of us realized that we need pollinators. I found two companies in Oregon that have native plants doing this. I've purchased some and we all agreed that I can plant them around the community garden. This will not only liven up the empty spots but will bring all the lovely bugs into our garden area to help the plants grow. -
Nellie Long 10/26/2022 10:22 AMMy takeaways from this challenge are that 1. composting in an apartment is possible if you find a fellow composter in a house. 2. Vegan without soy is doable most of the time. Being flexible with other ingredients really helps. 3. Portland has a rich community of people who give things away for free. Almost everything I collected was given away in an online community. It's not about giving to people who "need" it, it's about keeping things out of the landfill or purchased unnecessarily. Wonderful learning opportunity. -
Nellie Long 10/26/2022 10:06 AMToday, today, is a great day. I hope people had a wonderful time doing this challenge. -
Nellie Long 10/26/2022 10:02 AMWe are so close to the end. Today is a great day to do a couple of things. -
Nellie Long 10/25/2022 8:27 AMI'm sad that this is almost over. It's nice to work on something virtually together. -
Nellie Long 10/24/2022 4:19 PMThe beauty of eating more vegan meals is that when I got sick, that there was already stuff in my house to help with a sore throat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNourishing Food Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Nellie Long 10/18/2022 11:06 AMThis does not surprise me. I was listening to NPR last night and a woman professionally "dumpster dives" behind nice grocery stores becuase perfectly good food is thrown away consistently. I try to limit my waste by having a little garden. This lets me keep some things at ready so there is less waste. I'd buy specialized backpacking gear with the extra money and go on more trips. -
Nellie Long 10/13/2022 8:56 AMSo I looked at our team overall. We are #3 in points. If you need motivation to check in, here it is. We are so close to the other two teams. Checking in every day really helps keep the points up. Fabulous work everyone. -
Nellie Long 10/12/2022 8:17 AMI'm noticing that as I walk around my house there are naturally things to donate or put on "offer up". I definitely prefer finding people to use my stuff over donating it to an organization. The feeling of helping each other out is delightful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Use Muscle Power & Alternative Ways to TravelHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Nellie Long 10/10/2022 10:13 AMIn addition to choosing to walk instead of driving places, working from home is allowing me to have an impact by not driving to the office. I'd never really calculated it. 25 miles per day total. That adds up so quickly over a week, month etc.
