April's actions
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.
Simplicity
Buy Used Clothes
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will buy my clothes at second-hand stores when I shop.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Buy Used ClothesDo people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?
April Manasia 10/29/2024 5:40 PMMany people with economic privilege are used to having top quality things and when they start to show signs of wear, they think they aren't good anymore, when that's not necessarily the case. We can all, rich or poor, utilize thrift shops, whether to buy or donate to. When I go thrifting, I find some great pieces of clothing that had nothing wrong with them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
April Manasia 10/29/2024 5:31 PMI think it's cool. Even if you don't have a religious ritual that has to do with sunrise and sunset, it's still nice to appreciate them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
April Manasia 10/26/2024 10:15 AMThis is true to me. As a Christian, I believe that God created the world. It is important to spend time in God's creation, as it reminds us of His loving and generous character. It can be hard to see this if we spend all our time inside and glued to our screens. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
April Manasia 10/26/2024 10:13 AMPeople in poorer countries have animals closer to them and rely more heavily on them for things like milk and eggs, and the animal obviously needs to be alive to produce these things. You can only use an animal for meat when it's dead, so eating the animals would cause more hurt for them in the long run. People in richer countries generally don't have the same relationship with animals, so there is less immediate consequence if we kill and eat them.
