  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Buy Used Clothes
Do people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?

Many people with economic privilege are used to having top quality things and when they start to show signs of wear, they think they aren't good anymore, when that's not necessarily the case. We can all, rich or poor, utilize thrift shops, whether to buy or donate to. When I go thrifting, I find some great pieces of clothing that had nothing wrong with them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

I think it's cool. Even if you don't have a religious ritual that has to do with sunrise and sunset, it's still nice to appreciate them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

This is true to me. As a Christian, I believe that God created the world. It is important to spend time in God's creation, as it reminds us of His loving and generous character. It can be hard to see this if we spend all our time inside and glued to our screens.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

People in poorer countries have animals closer to them and rely more heavily on them for things like milk and eggs, and the animal obviously needs to be alive to produce these things. You can only use an animal for meat when it's dead, so eating the animals would cause more hurt for them in the long run. People in richer countries generally don't have the same relationship with animals, so there is less immediate consequence if we kill and eat them.
