Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straws out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?

I would like to reduce the amount of time I scroll in my bed before I go to sleep, usually about an hour. I think this would improve my sleep quality and help me feel better overall.

Same, it's a bad habit. Agreed, I am going to try to create a new habit of reading from a book instead. Thanks!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

It surprised me that washing dishes by hand consumes more water than a dishwasher, and that a cold water cycle uses less water than a load of clothes with warm water.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

What surprised you most about the products you use in your home?

Almost all the products I use list the fragrance as parfum, which makes it incredibly difficult to determine whether the specific type of fragrance they are using is artificial or natural.

What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I definitely noticed that it was difficult to avoid scrolling on my phone. Most of the time, I just pick up my phone and don’t even realize I’ve been scrolling for too long until it’s too late. I think I could have done better by monitoring my screen time and setting limits for myself on social media apps. However, I did try to listen to an audiobook or engage with my roommates and friends instead of scrolling sometimes.

What did you learn about your digital habits that surprised you the most?

I learned that I’m generating about 362 kg of carbon emissions from my digital footprint. This is equivalent to the amount of power needed to light the Eiffel Tower for 5 days. One fact that surprised me is that downloading videos uses less data than streaming and can help reduce your digital footprint.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

In the past, I have carried the items in my hands if it was manageable. If I was shopping with someone else, sometimes they were offer to let me put some items in their bag. Other times, I accept that I can’t carry everything out in my hands, so I buy a disposable one.

Oregon’s laws on disposable bags make it easier for me to put in the effort to bring a reusable bag, though. While they don’t cost much, there is a cost for obtaining a bag at the store. However, these bags have always been made out of recycled materials, which is much different from the plastic bags they give you in Georgia.

I have gotten into the habit of picking out one or a few of my cute reusable bags before I leave my home to go shopping. Of course, I’m not perfect, and sometimes I still forget. Now that I have a car in Corvallis, I have put a handful of bags in my trunk so I’ll have them ready if I drive to a store.
