Bringing nature back into the city is a way to deal with urban sprawl. If cities feel a little more natural, people like to live there rather than moving out and dividing up another piece of land that shouldn’t be touched.

Think about the possibility of celebrating Diwali in a green way: Avoid using electric lights to illuminate your home. Instead, opt for diyas (earthen lamps) and candles. This saves electricity. Limit usage of firecrackers that emit enormous smoke and sound. Having said that, I understand Diwali comes once a year, and stopping people form celebrating is not right on my part, so all I can say is enjoy while thinking about sustainable methods, if not possible, no guilt there, that is okay.

    Water Calculate My Water Footprint
How does your view on water consumption change after completing this action?

    Prem Mani's avatar
    Prem Mani 10/25/2024 6:19 AM
After calculating my water footprint, my view on water consumption has shifted towards a greater awareness of the hidden water usage behind everyday activities. This has led us to a more conscious approach to water conservation, as we realize the significant impact of seemingly small choices in my family's daily life on water resources, especially in water-scarce days of the year.

Key points about how I have changed my perspective:
    • Hidden water usage: I have become more aware of the "virtual water" embedded in the products we buy, like clothes, food, and electronics, which can significantly contribute to our overall water footprint beyond just our direct household water use.
    • Increased motivation to conserve: Understanding the scale of our water impact can motivate us to actively seek ways to reduce our water consumption, like fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and choosing water-efficient appliances.
    • Focus on specific areas: Calculating our water footprint can highlight specific areas where we can make the most significant impact, allowing us to prioritize changes in our lifestyle and purchasing habits.
    • Greater environmental awareness: It can lead to a broader understanding of water scarcity issues globally and the need for sustainable water management practices.

    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

For a driving outing with a friend, neighbor, or co-worker near Bangalore, consider scheduling a trip to Nandi Hills on either Saturday or Sunday morning; this allows for a leisurely drive, time to explore the hilltop views, and a return to the city before evening traffic builds up.
