In this economy, everyone is struggling. I finally went over to our local, non-profit Outreach center for a Volunteer Orientation. I'm looking forward to partnering with them on a regular basis to help those in my immediate community whenever and however I can.

Nice! I volunteered with a group years ago, and it was extremely rewarding to be able to help others.

    Community
What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

One thing I can do to help my community become more sustainable is clean up litter!! I live in a coastal town, so trash thrown on the side of the road can easily end up in the rivers/ocean. I've made it a personal goal, both this year and during Ecochallenge month, to volunteer more with local nonprofits for trash clean ups.

This weekend, I looked into the locations of my community's Blessing Boxes. If you're not familiar, they look like "little libraries" where people can leave non-perishable foods, and people can stop by and take what they need. I dropped some stuff off at one this weekend, and plan to start adding stuff more frequently after grocery shopping!

Now that the southern heat is finally settling down, I've turned ~up~ my AC temperature and opened my windows for fresh air! The chilly nighttime helps cool down the house so I don't need the AC much anymore.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Payton Messner's avatar

After completing the Climate Hero carbon calculator, I discovered my habit that emits the most carbon is my diet! Yikes! I knew eating meat is not the best for our environment, but there's a big social campaign to eat more protein. I will start to incorporate more protein-rich vegetarian options!

I think most people don't realize how much protein is available from non-animal sources, or that they can make delicious dishes with little or no animal protein. It just takes the willingness to put in the time and energy to experiment. Another benefit that I really like is the lower grocery bill!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?

I love going to the gym in the morning to get my day started! It wakes me up and makes me feel accomplished all before 8AM and sets the tone for my whole day. My favorite is when I can join a workout class, like floor Pilates, with other people. It gives me a sense of community and helps me stay motivated!
