Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 60 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Turn Off Lights and Electronics

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Energy

Adjust the Thermostat

I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

The People's EcoChallenge is a great way to check in on ourselves (and our personal choices), to frame where we're at and reframe where we want to be. I was encouraged by decisions I'm already making but also reminded (and learned) about some decisions I could begin making to further sustainability initiatives.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

Water footprint measures the amount of water used to produce each of the goods and services we use. I love to travel and typically enjoy my long showers so, I wasn't surprised by my current carbon footprint. Learning more about it helped me to make some needed changes. I shortened shower time, eliminated bottle water usage (opting for an at home filter), and know these choices will help improve my daily routine.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?

Although I failed to mark it on the daily, I exercised daily throughout this challenge. It has helped my mental clarity, my physical capabilities, and I will find a way to continue through the fall and winter as that's when my body (mind and spirit) need it the most.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

My furnace is natural gas, and this negatively impacts the environment through greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, and land and wildlife disruption.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

Now that we're in the heat season, I have turned the thermostat on but left it 2 degrees cooler than I normally do in the winters. I am offsetting by layering clothes and wearing house shoes or socks so my feet don't hit the cold, hardwood floors.
