REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Cooper Parkins 10/13/2025 11:20 PMI can't think of a barrier to using reusable water bottles. They're easy to come by, I think there's even a sustainability program on campus that will give you one for free if you ask for it, and every building has a couple of water fountains with water bottle fillers. This is a habit I've been in for a long time, and will continue to be. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?
Cooper Parkins 10/13/2025 11:18 PM- Wildlife Guardian 🦉
I try to have an in / out system, where if I buy something new, it is to replace something old that has outlived its lifespan with me, so I can get rid of it without accumulating too many things. I also really dislike owning a lot, for example, if I buy new things or I usually feel the need to go through all of my stuff and make a donation run of things that take up space, but I don't use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Cooper Parkins 10/13/2025 11:15 PM- Wildlife Guardian 🦉
That does ring true for me. I think that when people spend most of their time inside, they forget that there is a whole world out there to be enjoyed and lived in. People get caught in cycles of going to work or school then coming immediately home and putting on the tv. I know that when I make an effort to break that cycle and spend time outside I feel a lot better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Cooper Parkins 10/13/2025 11:14 PM- Wildlife Guardian 🦉
I think that Barry is right about this. I know I try to watch as many sunrises and sunsets as possible because I know there is one of each every day, and it doesn't take much time to go outside, sit in it, and enjoy this really beautiful thing that happens twice a day that goes mostly ignored by most people. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?
Cooper Parkins 10/13/2025 11:11 PM- Wildlife Guardian 🦉
Eating more fruits and vegetables positively affects me by improving my health. I've started eating a serving of fruit as dessert after dinner instead of having dessert foods with a lot of processed sugars, and so far I've been really enjoying it.
