Learn How War and Conflict Impacts People and the Planet

Wars and conflicts have devastating consequences—not only for people and communities, but also for ecosystems, biodiversity, and the climate. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how war and conflict impact human rights, displacement, and environmental degradation. I’ll explore how peace, justice, and strong institutions are linked to sustainability and resilience.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes — if any — do you think you’ll continue long-term?

I shower quicker and have more time to myself after said shower

I’m going to try limiting my showers to 5 mins and see if there’s differences for me
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
What did you learn about your digital habits that surprised you the most?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/20/2025 12:52 PM
My household could light the Eiffel Tower for 3 days off of internet usage
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/20/2025 12:47 PM
I emit most with travel in car and with food choice. I will have reduced trips once out of college and more control over food once I move out of my home and meals are purely in my hands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How are war and conflict connected to environmental degradation and displacement? What role do justice and peace play in building a sustainable future?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:21 PM
Conflict can sideline environmental concerns, allowing degradation to take place or become worse. As for peace, when people are on stable footing then we can address the "smaller" things in life
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:19 PM
It has varied my attitude by allowing me to recognize when and where different transport methods are most and least optimal
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:17 PM
My transportation choices affect my engagement in my community by getting me where I need to be, though each way has its own tell. Driving is an average one seen day to day, though it does allow people who carpool enjoy time together. Riding a bike feels good with the wind in your face, bringing a lighter mood wherever. Walking gives a sense of accomplishment, growing as distance traveled increases
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:14 PM
This does ring true for me. A culture that spends most of its time outdoors would be able to enjoy what there's been, what is flourishing, and what could be. There would be more peace to be expected, more fellowship
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

    Joseph Passenant's avatar
    Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:12 PM
I don't think the purpose is to celebrate, but to cherish the moments that do pass, to make the most of what time has passed
