Learn How War and Conflict Impacts People and the Planet
Wars and conflicts have devastating consequences—not only for people and communities, but also for ecosystems, biodiversity, and the climate. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how war and conflict impact human rights, displacement, and environmental degradation. I’ll explore how peace, justice, and strong institutions are linked to sustainability and resilience.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise or Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 20 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Transportation
Commute By Bike
I will commute by bike 5 miles each day and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Transportation
Drive Less and Combine Trips
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Energy
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Energy
Calculate My Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Water
Take 5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes — if any — do you think you’ll continue long-term?
Joseph Passenant 10/20/2025 6:30 PMI shower quicker and have more time to myself after said shower -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat did you learn about your digital habits that surprised you the most?
Joseph Passenant 10/20/2025 12:52 PMMy household could light the Eiffel Tower for 3 days off of internet usage -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Joseph Passenant 10/20/2025 12:47 PMI emit most with travel in car and with food choice. I will have reduced trips once out of college and more control over food once I move out of my home and meals are purely in my hands. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow are war and conflict connected to environmental degradation and displacement? What role do justice and peace play in building a sustainable future?
Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:21 PMConflict can sideline environmental concerns, allowing degradation to take place or become worse. As for peace, when people are on stable footing then we can address the "smaller" things in life -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:19 PMIt has varied my attitude by allowing me to recognize when and where different transport methods are most and least optimal -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?
Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:17 PMMy transportation choices affect my engagement in my community by getting me where I need to be, though each way has its own tell. Driving is an average one seen day to day, though it does allow people who carpool enjoy time together. Riding a bike feels good with the wind in your face, bringing a lighter mood wherever. Walking gives a sense of accomplishment, growing as distance traveled increases -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:14 PMThis does ring true for me. A culture that spends most of its time outdoors would be able to enjoy what there's been, what is flourishing, and what could be. There would be more peace to be expected, more fellowship -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Joseph Passenant 10/13/2025 7:12 PMI don't think the purpose is to celebrate, but to cherish the moments that do pass, to make the most of what time has passed
