Food

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

I listened to a podcast from Ted Health called "How to turn the tables on food waste" with Dana Gunders. I learned just how huge of a problem food waste really is - we waste over one TRILLION dollars worth of food each year, which contributes significantly to GHG emissions. It's especially frustrating when I also consider the global food crisis, where hundreds of millions of people have insufficient access to food. While Dana mentioned that institutional change and governmental action is needed to make big changes, individual action still matters. One way that stood out to me was using the Too Good to Go app, which allows grocery stores to sell overstock or goods that close to expiry to customers at a discounted price. I already had this app downloaded, and I would love to try it!

I live in Houston, and I considered the Too Good to Go app. However, there's a local Facebook group on the topic, and so many bad experiences were reported that I decided to give it a pass. Issues included meager and/or overly small servings, inconsistency of service across multiple transactions with a given restaurant, and lack of understanding of the program by restaurant managers and other personnel. I hope your experience is better!

I love this! You can watch so many documentaries on this very subject, to know that the people utilizing food pantries and facing the food crisis is constantly growing it's more and more important ever day. We compost at home, and grow our own veggies but I'd like to do more and this app is a great way. Thank you for sharing!
