Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Go Get a Check Up

Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Buy From a Farmers Market

I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.

COMPLETED

Food

Donate Food in My Community

I will find out what food programs are in my area and donate food and/or other items that they request.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 15 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Enjoy Fruits and Veggies

Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Food

Plant an Herb Garden

I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Switch To Cold Water for Laundry

I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Choose LED Bulbs

I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Connect with a Nonprofit

I will connect with a local nonprofit, environmental or otherwise, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Simplicity

Meditate or Create a Moment of Silence

I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 10 minutes each day to reflect on things important to me.

COMPLETED 3

I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

We recently installed wireless undercabinet lights for evenings when you go into the kitchen or other rooms so there isn't a need to put on the full room lights to see.

Re my earlier comment: I want to make it clear that I'm giving the kibble to cats, not eating it as a snack myself. :)

That's a great idea! My refrigerator's water/ice dispenser includes a low-level light, and I try to use that on late-night kitchen visits to grab cat kibble.

Switching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

When going places locally or in the neighborhood, to walk or bike there instead of driving the short distance.

I think that's a wonderful use of funds! When the weather permits, I like to spend time on the patio in the back yard admiring the native plants and watching the local feral cat colony cavort. It helps me deal with stress and reminds me to live in the moment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I do need to do my checkup yearly to ensure my thyroid meds are at the correct level and refilled. It feels good knowing; I am doing the right things to keep my health on track.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

We bought a new outdoor griddle and have been looking up and trying some new recipes on that. It's something that the entire family has enjoyed being involved in. Everyone is helping look up recipes as well as prepping and cleanup for making the meals.

My family and I have committed to purchasing as much locally grown produce as possible for our meal prep. This helps both our local farmers and small businesses. In researching, we were able to locate several local producers/farmers within our town or nearby towns that we did not know were there, and can now purchase from them.
