Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Community
Visit a Sustainability Fair
Attend a community sustainability fair to learn about and from local organizations which are working on sustainability in my area.
Health
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 1 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Brittany Phelps 10/07/2025 2:53 PMInside we focus more on immediate concerns - ourselves, work, and our immediate family and friends - while outside we are often moved to a more all encompassing view where we can appreciate nature and the people in our communities and world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Brittany Phelps 10/06/2025 7:41 PMThe largest area for me currently is housing, though the area where I have the most ability to reduce my footprint is likely transportation. Some changes I could make include reducing dairy, walking rather than driving, and shopping second hand.-
Carol Phelps 10/08/2025 4:21 PMWalking to nearby places and shopping second hand sound great! But I know you consume only a very modest amount of dairy, and that yogurt and cheese is a great source of calcium and protein, both of which women often don't get enough of. Dairy products are important for building strong bones and teeth, maintaining muscle, supporting the immune system, and aiding nerve function. Lack of sufficient calcium increases the risk of osteoporosis. Nutritional supplements may help, but our bodies were intended to get nutrition primarily from our food. The famous nutritionist Michael Pollan says, "Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food." I think the corollary "Do eat things your ancestors would have recognized as basic healthy foods" gives a thumbs up to organic dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese, which have been around for centuries, especially among Northern European peoples. The climate needs people like you to be healthy and active, much more than a few animal burps are going to damage it. (And don't forget that giraffe, deer, bison, camels, antelope, and a whole host of other animals are also ruminants - if we're going to blame the climate crisis on burping animals, we need to get rid of a lot more than dairy cows!)
