Heather's actions
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Energy
Upgrade Heating and Cooling Units
I will replace inefficient heating and cooling units with energy saving units.
Energy
Install an Alternative Energy System
I will install an alternative energy system, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters.
Energy
Donate to or Volunteer for Low-Income Solar Initiatives
Whether it's by donating or volunteering, I will research the benefits of low-income solar and find out how I can support low-income solar initiatives in my area.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Community
Meet my northerly neighbor
The official task is a daily one, but there's one particular neighbor I've tried to meet but haven't quite yet, so this is just a singular goal to meet him.
Simplicity
Replace Screen Time with Other Activities
I will replace 30 minutes of screen time each day with other activities.
Waste
Visit a Local Recycling Center, Landfill, or Transfer Station
Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.
Energy
Sign up for Response Rewards
My utility has a couple of programs to try and shift demand to cheaper times of day. Once I have my battery turned on, I want to sign up for one of the programs to reduce the need to build new natural gas plants to meet demand.
Energy
Choose Clean or Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Waste
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Health
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Explore a New Trail or Nature Walk
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 20 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day.
Water
Practice Eco-Friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Energy
Use an Energy Meter to Monitor My Use
I will use an energy meter to monitor my energy use and identify opportunities to save power.
Waste
Go Paperless and Opt Out of Junk Mail
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Share My Why
Take the People's Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Share My Why
Share My Why
I will share my Ecochallenge story and why I'm taking action for the planet — and earn 15 points!
Community
Attend a local zoning meeting
Attend a local meeting about a rewrite of the city's zoning code to connect with my community, participate in local government, and advocate for a more sustainable city.
Community
Visit a Sustainability Fair
Attend a community sustainability fair to learn about and from local organizations which are working on sustainability in my area.

I managed to achieve all but two of my one-time actions! I still want to make sure I get to those last two eventually, though. Plus I want to spend more time on some of the others - I started trying to insulate my hot water pipes with some insulating tape that I thought would be helpful for corners or short stretches of pipe, but which proved really frustrating to work with. I think I'll still need to go by a store and try getting some long tubes of pipe insulation to try instead. But I'm really proud of all that I've managed to do this month, especially finally getting solar on my house! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterHow do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact on your region's water?
Heather Phelps 10/31/2025 7:35 PMI'm lucky to be living so close to the Great Lakes - we're likely to have a much more stable water supply than many parts of the world. But we're still running into water quality issues, including from agricultural runoff and from salt contamination due to people oversalting during the winter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was the most valuable thing you learned or connection you made at the fair?

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Heather Phelps 10/16/2025 8:39 PM- Educator 🧠
I think sometimes I actually need to practice doing things away from a screen. I notice that for the first while I tend to keep checking my phone every few minutes, and I find it hard to focus on, say, reading a book for more than a few pages at a time. But as I keep going, my brain gets back in the rhythm and I get more into whatever I'm doing, and then I can go hours before I go back to my phone.
The other thing I've learned is that if I'm doing something I'm not 100% engaged with, like being in a meeting, watching a webinar, or even playing an RPG where I have to wait for other people to have their turns before I can do anything again, if my hands are free I'll pull out a phone or get distracted with other tabs on my computer. The solution is to bring knitting along - that gives my hands something to do, and takes just enough of my attention that I spend the rest of it on the meeting (or whatever) instead of getting all of my attention sucked away by a screen. -

I've been hearing a lot lately about the horrific energy hogs that are AI datacenters, and how companies have truly massive plans that will require as much energy as hundreds of thousands of homes. While I think there are some ways that machine learning can help the planet (e.g. managing renewable energy on the electric grid and adjusting demand to make the grid as clean and efficient as possible), the traditional large language models have a lot of problems. From the unethical way they've been trained, to the outsourcing of human thought, to the hallucinations and potential for even more erosion of a shared understanding of what is true, to the job losses that are already happening, I find it hard to believe any increase in the convenience of writing emails is actually worth the harm. But the energy demands are definitely near the top of my list for things I'm worried about AI, coupled with the fact that for all companies claim AI could help the world decarbonize, they're actually selling their AIs to oil and gas companies to extract even more fossil fuels to be burnt. So I've made the choice not to use AI, whether in my work or personal life, and to, as much as possible, avoid purchasing books and other materials created with the help of AI. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Heather Phelps 10/12/2025 2:22 PM- Educator 🧠
I've thought about it, and decided I'll never be able to go fully vegetarian. There are enough vegetable staples that I'm not willing to eat that I couldn't keep myself fed and healthy without some meat. However, after seeing charts of how beef emissions are vastly higher than even other types of meat, I've committed to not eating beef, other than rare occasions like being a guest at someone's home and that's what they're serving. Other than that, when I'm the one making the choice, I'll choose an option that isn't beef. I was never a huge hamburger fan to begin with, so this isn't a particularly hard sacrifice for me to make, but I'm glad I'm making at least one choice to address the challenge of our global food systems' emissions.-

Thank you, Heather! Reducing consumption of animal protein even a little--especially beef--makes difference in the world. I think that sometimes we have to start gradually and see what's feasible for us; taking too big of a first step might be too challenging, and then we might get discouraged and give up.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyEquitable access, environmental justice and creating employment opportunities are just a few advantages of low-income solar programs. Can you think of other benefits that could come from initiatives like this? Which advantages of low-income solar do you find the most compelling?
Heather Phelps 10/12/2025 2:16 PM- Educator 🧠
I think one of the coolest aspects of low-income solar programs is allowing people who have never had a stable connection to the electrical grid to finally have power that's available and under their own control. When the town I'd served in as a Peace Corps Volunteer got solar and batteries on their high school, the principal was so pleased that they would no longer be dependent on the unreliable island grid. Whether it was government-mandated online tests, or just having power in the first few days after a typhoon, before diesel deliveries to the island resumed, the school would have reliable power for the first time ever. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?
Heather Phelps 10/12/2025 2:13 PM- Educator 🧠
I'm in the Midwest of the U.S. We've seen a few different effects of climate change here. A few years ago, we had a thousand-year flood. Luckily it wasn't a mass casualty event like some flooding we've seen (I think one gentleman died), but there were stories of people camping out at a library and a Walmart overnight because they couldn't get home safely, and there was significant damage to local infrastructure. My parents' basement flooded, even though they were on top of a hill, from the force of the flowing water making its way into their septic tank and backing it up through the floor drain in their basement. Since then we've had a couple of summers with weeks at a time of poor air quality from wildfire smoke. Maybe less dramatic, but we also have just been getting a lot more unseasonal weather. This August we had a bunch of weather that felt like October. Then the first week in October felt like it should have been back in August! For people it can be kind of nice to get that variation in weather (even if some outdoor events were a bit miserable because it was 20 F colder and much wetter than anticipated), but I hate to think how that might be affecting plants and animals who are trying to live their lives without the benefit of weather reports and while depending on a bunch of other species whose internal clocks might be using different triggers, meaning they get out of sync from one another. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Heather Phelps 10/08/2025 7:13 AM- Educator 🧠
My work lends hands-on kits to teachers to use teaching their students about energy. But of course, with everything thoroughly handled by kids, sometimes damage happens! So I got out my soldering iron and repaired three or four alligator clips where the wire had gotten detached from the clip on the end, and then I added on a new wire to a mini solar panel which had one wire broken off so short no one could use it. Since these solar panels were originally donated to us after having been used by our Department of Transportation (yay for secondhand items!) we can't just go out and buy replacements if anything happens to a panel, so I'm really glad I was able to make it useable again!
