Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns

Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

Food

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals and/or 4 vegan meals each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

It is nice because you get to connect with nature a lot more and feel good about yourself. You also can walk with other people and it is nice to spend time outside and do be other friends will doing it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity

It is nice to try to not worry about my job when I am not in office. I feel like recently I have had it implemented into my life so much and it hasn't caused a lot of stress.

This is an interesting benefit that I hadn't thought of. It makes sense that if you can skip a step such as browning meat, you'll use less energy in the preparation of your meal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
Who is most affected by environmental degradation or environmental irresponsibility in your community? How are they affected? What actions can you take to support those affected by these issues?

Mostly lower-income and college students (which they fit in that too).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

I think we use a good amount because we have a lot of people in my house, and everyone has their own things that take up electricity. Because of this, I like to turn down the thermostat, and normally, people in the house don't notice.
