  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I love spending time outside, it helps me feel connected with nature. Witnessing all the changes through the seasons is amazing, getting to see different plants grow, bloom, thrive, is far more rewarding than spending time indoors. Also, by experiencing nature we can truly see the impact of our actions.

Rachel Carson's sentiment rings true for me. We are seeing the implications of a culture that spends most of our time indoors, loneliness, disconnection and depression. The distractions and noise we are bombarded with every day is a lot to cut through to get back to nature. Once I am there, everything else melts away and I can hear my own thoughts, see the beautiful mysteries of nature that delight and entertain and breathe calm.

I thrifted a sweater that had a small snag in the weave. I was able to fix it and it is now ready to wear!

What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

I love drying clothes by hanging them outside. It reduces my utility bill and it helps the environment.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

When I commute to work by bike I see the kids waiting for their school bus/school pick up. There are a few who now recognize me and wave. It's something that I would miss out on when driving.
