Kimberly's actions
Cultivating Communities
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. digital/virtual attendance, vacation without air travel).
Regenerating Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside and often with electronics with quality time outside walking, exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, observing nature, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Cultivating Communities
Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for minute(s) and collect items of litter.
Enacting Equity
Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary Experiences
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Enacting Equity
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
I will watch 3 documentaries about racism and racial injustice.
Balancing Consumption
Develop a Work-Life Balance
During the work day, I will schedule time for breaks to practice work-life balance.
Balancing Consumption
What is Sustainable Fashion?
I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and adopt at least one sustainable fashion practice.
Balancing Consumption
Know My Waste & Recycling Services
I will spend 60 minutes finding out how to recycle in my region, where landfills and/or waste sites are situated in my region, and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Balancing Consumption
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Balancing Consumption
Calculate My Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Nourishing Food
Compost Food Scraps
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Nourishing Food
What is My Food Supply Chain?
I will spend 120 minutes learning about my food supply chains, and complete a food waste audit.
Nourishing Food
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will spend 120 minutes learning about palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and other products known to contribute to deforestation, and replace or remove them.
Regenerating Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant a few in my area.
Regenerating Nature
Explore My Area
Each day, I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, which might include a park, water body, trail, etc.
Regenerating Nature
Complete an Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, work, or other shared space to identify the next steps for saving energy.
Regenerating Nature
Calculate My Water Footprint
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Kimberly Seeba 10/26/2022 10:59 AMI feel like I am more present both at work and during off-work hours when I find the proper work-life balance. It allows me to focus on work when I am there and to be "off of work" when I am not in the office. It is great to not take work "home with me." It makes me more available to my friends and family. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Kimberly Seeba 10/26/2022 10:49 AMInstead of flying to a work meeting out of state I am going to drive (my hybrid). My husband is now coming along as well! :) I actually enjoy driving and love road trips. I am not a fan of flying; so this was an easy change to make. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Repair a Broken ItemWhat did you fix and how did it go? Share a few pics if you can!
Kimberly Seeba 10/26/2022 9:03 AMI hemmed a slip that was too long to be worn with my dress instead of buying a new shorter slip. I also repaired a hand towel that was coming unraveled by repairing the side seam. All it cost me was a spool of purple thread that I bought at an estate sale for 50 cents. My husband drilled holes in the bottom of two ceramic pots so we could use them for plants instead of buying new pots with drainage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Kimberly Seeba 10/25/2022 6:15 PMIt feels like all of the screen time, especially on social media, is actually making us less connected to each other. When was the last time you called someone to wish them a happy birthday or just ask them how they are doing? Receiving a text or an email is just not the same. I know my day is brightened when I actually hear a loved one's voice. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Kimberly Seeba 10/25/2022 6:11 PMMy normal walking radius from my house used to be about half a mile. I expanded this to 1.5 miles during the challenge and have found some little restaurants/bars that didn't know about, but am eager to try. It has been great to expand my sense of "community." -
Kimberly Seeba 10/25/2022 6:02 PMOne of the daily activities I selected was picking up garbage on a walk. I have managed to do this almost every day of the challenge. I am shocked at how many cigarette butts I have collected. Just today I learned that these can be recycled through a free program with TerraCycle. This organization partners with dozens of companies to collect and recycle hard to recycle items. Please check them out at: https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONRegenerating Nature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Kimberly Seeba 10/24/2022 8:17 PMWithout pollinators there would be no fruit or vegetables. My house is hummingbird friendly in a big way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption What is Sustainable Fashion? How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Kimberly Seeba 10/24/2022 7:34 PMI never shop for an entirely new seasonal wardrobe, but supplement with a well chosen item or two that match what I already have when I need to twist it up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCultivating Communities Collect Litter on a Plog / PlalkWhat was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?
Kimberly Seeba 10/11/2022 7:37 PMIt is amazing how much tiny litter is out there, largely unnoticed. The most common items are plastic bottle caps, cigarette butts, and straws/straw wrappers. The most unusual thing I have encountered to date is a plastic leaf from an artificial plant. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBalancing Consumption Know My Waste & Recycling ServicesWhat did you find surprising or hopeful in your research?
Kimberly Seeba 10/11/2022 9:49 AMSo much more than plastic bags can be recycled at your local grocery store location! https://bagandfilmrecycling.org/view/whattorecycle
