  • Reflection Question
Balancing Consumption Develop a Work-Life Balance
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

I feel like I am more present both at work and during off-work hours when I find the proper work-life balance. It allows me to focus on work when I am there and to be "off of work" when I am not in the office. It is great to not take work "home with me." It makes me more available to my friends and family.
  • Reflection Question
Cultivating Communities Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

Instead of flying to a work meeting out of state I am going to drive (my hybrid). My husband is now coming along as well! :)  I actually enjoy driving and love road trips. I am not a fan of flying; so this was an easy change to make.

I hemmed a slip that was too long to be worn with my dress instead of buying a new shorter slip.  I also repaired a hand towel that was coming unraveled by repairing the side seam.  All it cost me was a spool of purple thread that I bought at an estate sale for 50 cents.  My husband drilled holes in the bottom of two ceramic pots so we could use them for plants instead of buying new pots with drainage.
  • Reflection Question
    Regenerating Nature Spend Time Outside
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Kimberly Seeba's avatar

It feels like all of the screen time, especially on social media, is actually making us less connected to each other.  When was the last time you called someone to wish them a happy birthday or just ask them how they are doing?  Receiving a text or an email is just not the same. I know my day is brightened when I actually hear a loved one's voice.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

My normal walking radius from my house used to be about half a mile. I expanded this to 1.5 miles during the challenge and have found some little restaurants/bars that didn't know about, but am eager to try. It has been great to expand my sense of "community."

One of the daily activities I selected was picking up garbage on a walk.  I have managed to do this almost every day of the challenge.  I am shocked at how many cigarette butts I have collected. Just today I learned that these can be recycled through a free program with TerraCycle. This organization partners with dozens of companies to collect and recycle hard to recycle items. Please check them out at: https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/.

Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

Without pollinators there would be no fruit or vegetables. My house is hummingbird friendly in a big way.
  • Reflection Question

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I never shop for an entirely new seasonal wardrobe, but supplement with a well chosen item or two that match what I already have when I need to twist it up.
  • Reflection Question
Cultivating Communities Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
What was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?

    Kimberly Seeba's avatar
    Kimberly Seeba 10/11/2022 7:37 PM
It is amazing how much tiny litter is out there, largely unnoticed. The most common items are plastic bottle caps, cigarette butts, and straws/straw wrappers. The most unusual thing I have encountered to date is a plastic leaf from an artificial plant.

So much more than plastic bags can be recycled at your local grocery store location! https://bagandfilmrecycling.org/view/whattorecycle
