Just started a budget tracker that is physical. My spending is getting out of hand. Even if I am purchasing from environmentally friendly persons, there is still too much to justify that I am actually doing well. Keeping an eye in the upcoming months. The holidays are the worst for spending responsibly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Balancing Consumption Research Impact Investing
After learning more about investing, how can you increase positive impacts and decrease negative impacts?

    Jacklyn Spada's avatar
    Jacklyn Spada 10/18/2022 10:58 AM
I don't think I can invest in anything, but I do know that watching purchases is something I am actively working on. Buying local produce and trying not to "convenience" purchase things is where I try and find things to invest in.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Balancing Consumption Track My Purchases
What have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?

I hyper fixate on things and randomly buy items on said hype fixation and then never use them, which is wasteful. I have a project I am working on and was looking for pens and paper and things I already have but "not nice" in my eyes. They work perfectly well and I had to really rein that in. Actually surprised I was able to.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nourishing Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

This doesn't surprise me in the least. I have ADHD and often forget of things I have purchased, over purchase and over fill. Today I planned 2 dinners. I can never plan anything else. Half the time I do, I no longer want to eat that item. Sometimes I get lucky and I have a meal fixation and will eat that same thing 5-10 times in a row with no problems.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Balancing Consumption Less Screen Time
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

There is no anonymity any longer. People are everywhere. I can hardly find pictures from high school let alone videos (I am older...lol). The younger generations are not going to be able to hide from some things and we won't be able to hide them from other things. I think safety is my main concern. Some people suck...I have seen and read some horrible things that I wouldn't wish someone else to have to be affected by. Taking time away from social media might be the biggest step I am trying to work towards. I don't use Facebook any longer, but I do still use Instagram. Working towards the big "snip".

Today I timed myself: 3 minutes and 46 seconds. Hair washing day is Saturday. I will check on how long that takes and time how long the water is on/off for.

    Regenerating Nature Take Shorter Showers
With 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?

I noticed I have a terrible habit of keeping the water running during dish cleaning time. New goal is to try and only use a sink with a little water in it to scrub the items clean with that and use the dishwasher on the eco mode if I have too. I buy water in aluminum cans because I still think even a water filter has too many variables. Maybe I am wrong, but I haven't found anything otherwise. I can't drink the tap. I know myself too well and I can taste...EVERYTHING. Call me spoiled, stuck up...whatever you want...but I didn't grow up drinking the sink water because it was real bad quality (the water company literally told us not to do it) and mixed with being poor. This meant you got food stamps and knock off brands of soda and juice instead. I am just grateful that I found water I like the taste of in a recyclable container!

    Dishes are the next step.
Maybe next it will be car washes? When it doesn't rain, my car gets greasy!

Trying to find time for my creative side more nowadays. Stopped screen time for about an hour doing journaling and it has been really nice!

I was looking for a reusable A5 binder for my journaling (trying to find more sustainable ways to express my creativity) and came across a women owned business Jumping Fox Designs. A beautiful linen covered, hard-bounded A5 binder in forest green called my name. Sturdy and packaged in recyclable materials. All the boxes ticket! Highly recommend you check them out if you are looking for something to hold your planner/calendar...ect!

I actually started doing this a few years back. I set up a song list on my bluetooth speaker and make sure it is around 5 minutes long (or less) and get in and get out. Sometimes, I even turn off the shower if I am doing something like hair washing. I have a lot of hair and it is time consuming. Just got me a little suds sitting on my head while the shower is off and then rinse off as needed. No extra water just pouring down the drain during washes! Highly recommend the timer with music thing if you have the ability. It has been super helpful keeping track of timing.
