Energy
Calculate My Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Community
Research CO2-emissions-reduction technologies
Continue my efforts with URSA Engage for at least 90min
Community
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community during the challenge.
Energy
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Ethan Tammar 10/07/2025 7:40 PMMy overall carbon footprint is quite minimal (3.6T CO2-eq / yr), and the majority of my footprint can't be controlled (even living in an economy triple dorm and eating vegan has some unescapable carbon footprint). There are however actions I could take to marginally lower my footprint. These actions include buying seasonal, local, and unpackaged produce and finding a way to compost unavoidable food waste (like banana peels). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?
Ethan Tammar 10/06/2025 7:34 PMThe thing that surprised me the most was the amount of water I save by being a vegan and by keeping shopping to a minimum. This calculator influenced my perspective on water consumption by showing me that there’s a strong link between having a minimalist lifestyle and limiting water use. The main change I noticed for minimizing my water consumption was the obvious - taking shorter showers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat did you learn about your digital habits that surprised you the most?
Ethan Tammar 10/05/2025 4:06 PMI learned that my digital habits overall have a very minimal carbon footprint of around 7.9kg CO2e per year (I can offset that with just 20mi of city biking). This is surprisingly low considering the internet has comparable emissions globally to aviation. I don’t use social media, but surprisingly, 4 hours of browsing a day would multiply my digital emissions by a factor of 10.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Ethan Tammar 10/05/2025 3:52 PMI often buy produce and bread contained in plastic containers. I could buy fresh bread in paper containers and buy fruit without a container.-

I try not to use produce bags, too, but I've learned to re-use the bags for those items that need them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Ethan Tammar 10/05/2025 3:48 PMAt OSU, there are many initiatives to improve solar electricity generation, however a lot of our energy still comes from natural gas. Natural gas has minimal local effects since it doesn’t emit particulate matter, however it has a severe effect on the climate. Due to natural gas deposit leaks, natural gas can have similar climate effects to coal.
