Emma's actions
Health
Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness
Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to 5 people or perform 5 random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minutes each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Community
Join My Neighborhood Association
I will join my neighborhood association or another local group of decision makers.
Energy
Calculate My Digital Carbon Footprint
I will calculate my digital carbon footprint and take steps to reduce my CO2 emissions.
Waste
Research Local Waste and Landfill Sites
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Simplicity
Research My Investment Portfolio for Alignment with My Values
I will find out what stocks and bonds are in my investment account portfolio to determine if they align with my values (e.g. environmental, social responsibility, community).
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Waste
Advocate For Better Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Go Paperless and Opt Out of Junk Mail
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Energy
Switch To Cold Water for Laundry
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Simplicity
Find or Join a Local Sharing Economy
If my community does not have a tool library or other sharing economy options, I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Nature
Explore a New Trail or Nature Walk
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Plant Trees
I will plant 1 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Energy
Participate in Guelph Greener Homes program for upgrading to energy efficiency measures
In support of Race To Zero, the City plans to offer a 0% interest loan to residential property owners in Guelph to help cover the costs of residential energy efficiency upgrades to be paid back over 10 years. Find out if you are eligible for the low-income grant program for installing heat-pumps
Waste
Complete a Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will share a photo and reflection of this action on the feed.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 5 conversations.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Emma Wegener 10/13/2025 5:07 PMLearning more about the place you live, especially in terms of the wilderness that surrounds you, is one of the best ways that I’ve found to feel connected to my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Emma Wegener 10/12/2025 6:41 PM- Adventurer 🏔
Planting a tree today in my in-laws backyard gave me a beautiful hour to spend mindfully in the sunshine. I was able to enjoy the moment, and felt like I was doing something good to make a difference! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Emma Wegener 10/11/2025 8:05 PM- Adventurer 🏔
Reducing the amount of junk mail I receive has really improved my peace of mind. I’ve also opted out of many junk emails that I end up deleting anyways, which had again helped reduce my mental clutter.-
Frank Tallman 10/12/2025 7:36 AM- Foodie 🍱
That is something that I definitely need to look into. I receive way to much junk mail myself.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Emma Wegener 10/11/2025 8:03 PM- Adventurer 🏔
I plan to invest it in more energy efficient choices! Perhaps I can put my savings toward a high efficiency dish washer! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Emma Wegener 10/11/2025 8:01 PM- Adventurer 🏔
I could reduce my environmental footprint by hanging clothing in the sun to dry, instead of using my dryer. It will also extend the life span of my clothing!-
Kerry Keck 10/12/2025 1:00 PMMy laundry is hanging outside as I read your comment. Even living in a large city, I think the laundry still smells better for hanging outside.
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Emma Wegener 10/11/2025 7:59 PM- Adventurer 🏔
Buy in season produce! And freeze or can what I can’t eat before it spoils.-
Jamie Leigh 10/12/2025 4:29 AMI've been trying to visit our weekly farmer's market to buy produce and eggs. The quality is so much better.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?
Emma Wegener 10/11/2025 7:50 PM- Adventurer 🏔
I was shocked how high my virtual water footprint was! It has changed the way I think about water use - it’s not just what comes out of your taps at home, and I will try to be more mindful of energy consumption to reduce my impact.
