What are some of the barriers to sharing economies? What is your plan for supporting or creating one in your community?

So far, I have not made steps towards building a sharing economy... but I have participated in one. I stopped by KnoxFill on a whim this weekend, and it was the first day that their crafts section was open. Fabric, yarn, thread, needles, ribbon, beads, and more were available for people to put in a small ($5), medium ($8), or large ($12) bag. Instead of spending $30+ at a craft store for too-many crochet needles and yarn, I spent $12 for 2 needles that fit the gauge of yarn I grabbed, along with some other knick-knacks.

Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

My biggest hurdle is remembering to grab a mug before I head out - I have one that is durable, which I can lug around in my bag without worrying about, but half the time I leave my lunch on the counter as I head out to work. Giving myself more time to get ready, taking things slowly, and being intentional about my morning routine will reduce the hurdles preventing me from bringing my mug along.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Physically standing outside, taking in all your senses -- listening to cars pass, leaves rustle, crickets chirp; smelling crisp, fall air; or feeling the warmth of the sun -- is a very grounding experience. It takes me out of my head and back to the present, and that gives me the chance to actually see and be curious about what is around me.

I agree, anytime I'm feeling in a funk I just go for a walk and try to connect with nature. This weekend I stayed in a cabin at Mt hood and just enjoyed being in the forest and being in the mountains. It gave me a much needed reset.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

I could grocery shop at least once weekly at the Knoxville farmers' market or at Three Rivers Market, a local food co-op, to source my food locally. I take it for granted how far food must travel to get to my plate. How much carbon does it take for me to have a banana in my smoothie? Focusing on local and seasonal produce can be a fun way to incorporate new foods in my diet, celebrate the changing season, support local businesses, and be more sustainable.

I stumbled across a historic trail behind the medical offices off Old Weisgarber & Dowell Springs. Though I was frustrated with how disconnected the sidewalks by Middlebrook Road were (causing me to explore alternative routes around Middlebrook), it led me to this paved forest trail that I never would have found otherwise. There were plaques showcasing a slave cemetery and a historical brick house. Yet another great tragedy of slavery is the total lack of history tied to each person: the family who owned the property lives on in name, but many others who lived there are only remembered by where they were buried.

    Transportation
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking, or driving?

Biking brings me much more joy compared to driving. I see more dogs, fellow cyclists, and pedestrians enjoying the outdoors; I enjoy the sounds of leaves rustling in the wind and birds chirping. I might have a few frustrating interactions with drivers at intersections, but it makes the times that drivers do pay care all the better.
