I found this infographic with a bunch of ways I could reduce my environmental impact. Some of these I have heard of and even implemented like using my own shopping bag and my own water bottle. But there are a lot of new suggestions I've never considered or didn't know existed. For example, using a cloth or bowl instead of plastic wrap on leftovers, buying loose leaf tea instead of teabags, and I'd never heard of reusable food wraps!

Calculating my own CO2 footprint was very interesting. I didn't realize how much pollution and CO2 is released from some of my daily activities, like using online services, or driving my car to work. Although I can't do anything to improve my emissions in some regards (i.e. I need to drive to work), I think it's beneficial to know how much pollution I am creating.
This is the website I used to calculate mine: Carbon Footprint Calculator – Calculate your carbon footprint with myclimate | myclimate

Hi Kimi: I truly understand your position; I drive 44 miles round trip to work with no public transit option. We can only continue to make efforts on our behavior while on this planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I never read a lot of the mail that I know is junk, but just never get around to canceling them. I cancelled a lot of my paper mail that I could think of, but also unnecessary paper and email subscriptions.

I get a bunch of charity appeals, a surprising number from charities I've never even heard of before. A few years ago I had a couple big rounds of writing them all back and asking them to take me off their lists. If I'm going to donate, I'll do it online - you don't need to send me a physical mailer! It didn't work for all of them, but at least it reduced the numbers. Probably time to do that again with the various charities that have found me again since!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Personally, actually having the water bottle on me seems to be the biggest issue. When I have a water bottle in front of me, I automatically use it, but when it's hidden or not used, I never remember to. I've bought a cuter water bottle, and silly as it is I have been able to better keep track of it. Added a photo of my exact water bottle!

    Simplicity
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

Creativity is necessary because we sometimes need to think of creative ways to utilize the things we see every day. For example, I personally drink a lot of energy drinks and frequently have cans, and normally I just return them. But beyond returning there are other things I can do, I found this lantern made of a coke can that I would love to try.
