Alex J's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottles from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Community
Volunteer in My Community
I will volunteer 7 hours in my community during the challenge.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will shop at a farmers market or food co-op to support local farmers and businesses. By doing so, I may be able to learn more about who produces the food I eat and goods I buy.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 60 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Transportation
Walk Instead of Driving
I will walk 10 miles each day instead of driving and avoid sending CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Nature
Plant Trees
I will plant 3 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
Food waste hurts our planet and our communities. I will cook at least 1 meal with zero waste each day.
Nature
Explore a New Trail or Nature Walk
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Repair a Broken Item
I will repair at least one item that is broken, but is repairable. This might be items like garden tools, sewing machine, small appliances, electronics, clothing, and more.
Simplicity
Replace Screen Time with Other Activities
I will replace 30 minutes of screen time each day with other activities.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Alex J Wynne 10/06/2025 4:12 PMSome barriers I can think of would be quality of water (Since moving here I have to drink water after its been filtered or boiled to get rid of the odd taste), and access to refill stations. Carrying a water bottle around is great, but a tad pointless if you cannot refill it throughout the day when it is finished. I could make this a permanent habit by adding my water bottle to my list of essentials before I leave (phone, keys, wallet, glasses, + water bottle).

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Alex J Wynne 10/06/2025 4:11 PMNo, I prefer to walk anyway (and gas is expensive). If I am driving my car it's typically further than 10 miles, or otherwise a need has arrived. I plan on bringing my bike back to campus in November, so hopefully I can add biking to my transportation options.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?
Alex J Wynne 10/06/2025 4:11 PMIt made my muscles very sore and increased how much food I had to consume to maintain energy, but it was very gratifying to feel the soreness as a result of my muscles growing. I tried to hit different muscle groups each day, but I liked swimming and the punching bag. Exercise is a good physical outlet for stress for me, and I found this to be helpful especially during my first week here in Oregon.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Alex J Wynne 10/06/2025 4:10 PMIn Oregon, there is a mix of resources coming from both in-state and out. The highest resource type used was hydroelectric (33.7%), followed by natural gas (20.24%). We have smaller percentages of coal, nuclear, solar, and wind produced energy [Source]. Hydroelectricity is produced by damming, which can negatively impact local aquatic populations and change the landscape. There is still a high reliance on non-renewable resources like natural gas and coal, and both produce larger amounts of GHG, a combined 12,218,562 metric tons of it [Source]. This is bad for the environment, as we know, because taking resources and burning them at faster rates than they can replenish is not sustainable, and is actively destroying our ozone layer and contributing to global climate change.
